Upgrade from 11.2 to 11.3 and less premium users

Postby giorgiotobia » Mon Jan 21, 2008 4:44 am

I've seen the number of licensed premium users in 11.3 community edition release is 10 against 25 of 11.2.
I'm supposed to delete all my premium users that exceed this new limit before trying to upgrade, is it correct?
thanks

You need to either delete them or change them to Standard users.

Hi

Or purchase a SBE licience for 25 users

There is a special deal going at the moment.

Also the SBE brings added benifites such as deleted item recovery etc.

Does the SBE 25 user license include archiving ability?

Yes it does. But you need to order before the end of January, otherwise it will be only 20 users.

why did it change from 25 to 10?

Postby rictec » Fri Jan 25, 2008 7:53 am

why did it change from 25 to 10 it creates a problem to people using scalix with 11 or 15 premium users.
can you say next release it will be 5? ou none?

well i have to stick to 10.2 and have a lot of trouble preventing scalix from be replaced by exchange cos after all for those who dont care about OS price a exchange 25 users licence its cheapper then a scalix one.

not a great move at least for me

It is possible Scalix will change it again, but they have kept it at 25 for quite some time, so I doubt they would. And we haven't heard anything about any such changes. The resellers was informed before Scalix announced it.

I would like to find out what you mean by your pricing comment, though. I went to MS's website to see what it costs (always know what your competition charges ...)

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsserver2 ... icing.mspx
MS SBS with 5 CALs: $599
20 CALs add-on: $1,929
Total: $2,528 (25 users)

http://www.microsoft.com/exchange/howto ... ngfaq.mspx
Exchange Standard: $699
Enterprise CAL: $36 + $67 = $103
Total: $4,174 (25 users)

http://www.scalix.com/enterprise/editions/pricing.php
Scalix SBE-20: $650 (25 until the end of January 2008). Also gives 60 (75 if 25 premium) Standard users for free + 12 months of updates.
Scalix SBE-50: $995. Also gives 150 standard users for free + 12 months of updates.

let me explain

Not all of us live in the US and those prices you give here are not from resellers.
both the server hardware and the windows OS are from most people here one thing.
i my opinion this type of change hit hard on small business since resellers sell the OS with the windows server software and they only tend to alter that if you especific ask for linux.
a supported linux distro costs money too so.

The Scalix prices I quoted was what was given to me as a reseller as End-User. This is the price I am supposed to sell Scalix at. It may be more expensive in the EU, though, I will agree with that, as they charge $650/650 euros for SBE-20. This is something I personally think is unfair (as the Euro is significantly stronger than the USD), but the EU resellers will have to take that up with Scalix.

For a supported free distro you can use CentOS 5. In 11.3 it is for evaluation only, but we've been promised it will become supported for production in 11.4. I have been using it for quite a few versions of Scalix on my own servers without any issues.

there is another false preception here

Postby rictec » Fri Jan 25, 2008 10:16 pm

this if another miss
people tend to see it here like this if you go from exchange 2000 to exchange 2003 its an upgrade .....so it can be costly
if you go from 10.1 to 11.3 its a service pack ....to solve some xpto problem they have.
if dificult to get people of exchange/outlook and this kind of changes doesnt help doing it
neither does suporting outlook 2007 in my opinion
well as i m using fedora with scalix/evolution i will upgrade to 11.3 anyway its a very small server after all and for tnow keeping virus software out of my servers and workstations.

thanks for your info Valerion it was great to compare.

Where do we find the details about this special deal?
We have 11.2 community edition and want to upgrade to 11.3 but want to investigate the option of purchasing more premium users for it. I can't find the pricing for that for the community edition.

You will have to talk to a reseller. There are several on the Scalix website.

In short, if you order a 20-user SBE you will receive 25 users. However, this expires tomorrow (end of January), so I don't know if it will be possible to place the order in time.

Thanks Valerion. I think the client is opting for just using the community edition with only 10 premium users.
