Xandros Server and Scalix

Postby cll2001 » Tue May 30, 2006 7:02 pm

I have been considering purchasing Xandros Server with Scalix. Does anyone here have that combo installed? And if so is there a different website for support for that? How easy is the install? Is it worth the cost of Xandros instead of one of the other distros?
I realize that it's a very new product but I wanted to get some feedback before going to ask the CFO for the $495 for R&D. And if it works out another $2700 for the remaining users.

I've been the project manager for the Xandros OEM integration on our side.

All I can say is that Xandros have done a tremendous job at making Linux easy to use for the Windows converts. I've been impressed with their desire to make everything feel good, look good and remain well-behaved. I've seen and used it from the earliest Beta buiilds, through release candidates, up to the final build and, from an integrated systems point of view, it really rocks.

You will be able to setup your Xandros OS and Scalix server in less than one hour in total and you'll be good to go. UI is seemless. If you've seen SuSE and YaST and believed that this is a great comprehensive admin UI for Linux, Xandros Management Console really takes it to the next level.

I believe you'll like it. Even though it is a 1.0 and I based on all experience there will be some glitches here and there, in my opinion this sets the new gold standard for admin-friendliness in Linux administration.

You can purchase all of that through Xandros - www.xandros.com should give you the details; from our point of view it is an oem product, so Xandros themselves and their resellers are marketing the product - while we do provide second level support and will keep the Scalix part of the product up to date going forward.

Enjoy and let us know how it went.....

Xandros Trial version

Postby Gman8845 » Tue Jul 04, 2006 10:13 am

I'm testing Xandros server,Scalix, and the other components of Xandros server and think they've hit a goldmine. There is a trial version of Xandros that is essentially a full working product that require registration, and activation for the Xandros Network Debian repository sites. The drawback is it allows only a few activations before nag screen comes up (so I'm told). But the demo will give you everything you need to get the feel of Scalix and the rest of the Xandros Server ingredients. It is essentially the Small business edition of Scalix. Xandros recently created a user forum for thier Server and Scalix by itself so check it out at http://forums.xandros.com/index.php

:-) Great that you like it - I was extremely and positively surprised and pleased with the work Xandros have done.

Minor clarification here - you compare it to our Small Business Edition package. Now, while Xandros is a all-in-one-box offering and can well be used in Small Biz environments, there are two important differences that I want to point out here....

- Scalix Xandros edition is Enterprise edition, so from a Scalix licensing point of view, it allows for multi-server operations etc., even though the Xandros integration doesn't fully support that at this point.
- Scalix Xandros Edition comes with five (5) built-in premium users while the base package of Scalix Small Business Edition has fifty (50)

Hope this helps and enjoy *all* our products! :-)

This question needs to go to Xandros sales; from our and a licensing perspective, they can use all those features and make the choice on what they want to support and offer.

One obvious one that I can't see them providing is the active directory integration; the Xandros server comes with it's own directory and one of the big advantages is that this is tightly integrated. They do have integration of THEIR directory with active directory though, but it would be in a different shape from what our integration provides.

So... please contact Xandros sales or post on their forum!

Cheers,
