Large Incoming Mails disappearing

Postby chrisv » Wed Mar 22, 2006 10:56 am

Hi,

I've got a client that frequently recieves large emails (around 20Mb) and these messages seem don't show up in the user's Inbox at all. Not in SWA or Outlook.

When I check /var/log/maillog I see that sendmail accepted the message for delivery, but after that the message seems to disappear from the system.

I've read the forums and tried to override any default limits by following the instructions to impose limits on incoming mail, but specified that the allowed size should be very large (100Mb)

Is there just a setting I'm missing? Or can't Scalix recieve such large mails?

Regards,
Chris

I had the same issue a few weeks ago -

I have Clam a/v running, and large messages would end up in the error queue due to clam timeing out while scanning the messages.

Do you have Clam?

Thanks for the quick reply RickC

Nope, no Clam we have an upstream server cleaning messages coming to this server.

Any other ideas?

Why are messages being received into sendmail first ? Are you using SpamAssassin on this box ?

If not, this shouldn't be the case as the SMTP Relay will direct any incoming message through to Scalix first.

The only reasons that a message will go to sendmail first are:
  1. Sendmail is listening on the external address
  2. SMTPFILTER=TRUE has been added to smtpd.cfg to allow for spamassassin processing
  3. Scalix isn't installed on the box

It used to be the case that MaxMessageSize in /etc/mail/sendmail.cf was set to 10M but, looking at my file, this is commented out and the default is 0, i.e. unlimited.

Does the originator of the message get any NDN back ?

Also, if you can see the message being received in sendmail, where does it go next. If it's destined for Scalix on the same box, you should see it go through the scalix mailer (unix.in).

Cheers

Dave

Nope, not running Spamassassin either, I inserted the SMTPFILTER=TRUE after reading a forum entry where it was used to limit the incoming size and set a the limit to 100mb in Sendmail when the unlimited setting didn't resolve the issue.

I watched the logs on the sending server as well and didn't see anything

That the message does. Where should I be looking next?

Chapter 22 of the Administration Guide (Audit Log) shows you how to configure auditing to be able to track the message through the server.

Hi,

We set the audit level for the Service router to 9 and here's the log output from the test message we sent. It would appear that the message was deilvered internally by Scalix. We removed all the recipient entries, but they show that the the correct person was the recipient of the message. The message is however still not visible in SWA or Outlook.

Try the following and see if it shows up:

Code: Select all

omlist -u 'User Name' -p 'password'

If not, it's either been handled by an autoaction (rule) or really not in your mailbox ...
