Mail Delivery Error

Postby dward » Tue Mar 14, 2006 8:59 am

Hi, I'm getting the foolowing error when I try to send to the following email address brian_mckeever@dell.com

----------------------------- ERROR REPORT -----------------------------
Message could not be delivered to the following recipient:

Brian.McKeever / internet
DDT1=RFC-822; DDV1=Brian_McKeever@Dell.com;

because: Unknown Non-Delivery Reason (550)
------------------------------------------------------------------------

I can send from a webmail interface (not tried from SWA) for the same account & sends OK. I've seen a previous post where the addresses was a typo but this is not the case here.
Any ideas ?

It's likely that you are not authenticating with the SMTP Relay and are being rejected because you are submitting a message outside of your domain.

Given that you can send OK from SWA, you've most probably added the IP address of your server to the smtpd.cfg file.

If you want this to work for other submitters, the following conditions need to be met ( based on the default rules in the smtpd.cfg file ):

1. The user has authenticated with the SMTP Relay. If authentication is successful, that user can send messages whereever they want. This is an inbuilt rule for the SMTP Relay.

2. The IP address of the submitting client/MTA is in the range defined by any RELAY accept lines.

3. The domain name of the submitting client/MTA is in the range defined by any RELAY accept lines.

What is usually the case is that there is no IP address range specified so we go to rule 3. In every case where this problem is reported, people have not configured reverse DNS lookup on the IP addresses for connecting clients. This means that we can't make the check if the domain name of the client is in the defined range.

I strongly advise that, rather than opening up the IP or domain range, you configure the clients to authenticate.

Cheers

Dave

I can't see that this is the problem since I have not experienced any problems sending to any other addresses only the one mentioned above.
Initially I thought it was a problem with the address itself but I am able to send from a webmail interface for the same originator's address.

I'm using Outlook 20003 as the client & Scalix Outlook Connector

Just to clarify,

1) I can send from the ISP's webmail inteface;
2) I get the error mention when I try to send from Outlook using the Outlook Connector
3) I have not tried to send from SWA
4) I have no problem sending to other email address

dward,

You are all over the place. I just posted a response at:

Hi Don,

I think you're getting me mixed up with "dmode".
Appreciate this is a free forum and apologies if I've caused offence.

Cheers

Hi dward,

Yes, I did get you confused with dmode. My appologies.

I'd like to ask you to try sending with SWA. I don't think that is going to fix anything I would just like to know what the SWA error message says. Sometimes it is more descriptive than Outlook/SC error messages.

Thanks,
Don

I think this is a problem with reverse DNS as you mentioned earlier.
I have amended sendmail.cf & added a smarthost which should solve the problem

Thanks for your help
