Send On Behalf Of A Group

Postby lleahu » Wed Feb 03, 2010 2:40 pm

Hi,

I've got a customer who is running Scalix 11.4.6 (Server and Outlook Connector). They have a number of groups defined and would like to be able to send on behalf of a group. For example, they have a group called support@<domain>. When an email comes into that group, it is distributed to the members of that group. They'd like to be able to reply to those messages in such a way as that the reply appears to be coming from the group itself as opposed to the individual person who sent the reply?

Is this possible to do with a group? Or do they need to convert that group into a shared mailbox and do replies on behalf of that mailbox?

Thanks!

*bump*

Does any one know if it is possible to reply on behalf of a group?

What client are they using? The only way I know of to reply as a group is using an SMTP client (outlook not with connector, thunderbird, etc) and configure the sender settings appropriately. You can usually have multiple defined so the user can choose who to send as. That does not work with the connector, or in webmail.

Otherwise... yes, use a shared mailbox.

They are using Outlook 2003 / 2007 with the Scalix Connector.

It looks like in Outlook 2003, the only way to create the SMTP Account is to first select either POP3 or IMAP account. It also won't let the account be created if the username or pop3/imap (receiving) server is not specified. Obviously, the "normal" (scalix connector account) should not be filled in here... so what would I put?

This seems to require a separate mailbox to be created just to satisfy the username / login server requirements in order to send out an email as the Group name / email address. Doing all these steps seem strikingly similar to converting that group into a shared mailbox (minus the auto action rules, removal of old group, etc).

Thanks for your input.

Okay... ran into another problem here...

I have two premium users setup in Outlook. User1 has made User2 a delegate w/ owner rights to the INBOX. User2 can see messages in User1's mailbox and can reply on behalf of.

The issue is that the From address on the replies show the full name and email address of User2 (i.e. "user2" on bhelf of "user1"). We have a security need to hide all information of the person doing the reply (i.e. user2) so that the recipient sees only user1 (the shared mailbox). Is this possible to configure in Scalix / Outlook?

Try sending a message to an account outside of your Scalix system. You will see that the "on behalf of" is not visible in the From: address anymore.
The message will still have a X-Sender header. This can be switched off by using the "--sender" switch from ommodu or the corresponding method in SAC.

Code: Select all

       --sender Y|N
If  sender is set to N on a mailbox, then delegates sending via
that mailbox will not have a Sender header added to an outgoing
               internet message. Default Y.
