Slowness of the newly installed Scalix Server.

Postby indunil75 » Mon Mar 23, 2009 5:10 am

Dear Scalix users,

I am running scalix 11.0.4 on a normal PC with 2 GM ram. It works fine. Since this is a normal PC, I bought a Server hp proliant ML 110 with 4 gb ram and mirrored Hard Disks to replace current Scalix server running on a normal PC. I installed the same software (Scalix 11.0.4) on NEW hp proliant ML 110 server. Then, I got the current /var/opt/scalix from current server to NEW hp proliant ML 110 server by using rsync. I happened successfully.

Now, We can logging to admin console and webmail on this NEW hp proliant ML 110 server.

But, the question is this newly installed NEW hp proliant ML 110 server is quite SLOW while comparing to current server running on a NORMAL PC.

I quickly want to replace this current Normal PC to this newly installed NEW hp proliant ML 110 server.

So, I need to overcome this slowness of the NEW hp proliant ML 110 server.

Could u pls explain why?

What will have to do in Scalix Environment?

Hope to hear from you.

Thanks
Indunil

Are both systems running on the same network? different ip's /hostnames? if you rsynced across did you run a reconfigure via the scalix installer to reset the config for new ip if you're running in parallel? are all permissions correct (omcheck) and uid/gid of the scalix user correct?

Assuming you've got the same os build and hostname and ip are the same then if you isolate the hp server in its own test network it should perform without problem.

You'll need to share a bit more info about what part's of scalix are slow on the hp server.

I run scalix 11.4.3 (CentOS 5.2) on exactly the same HW config. as you do and It works fine...

Try to tune OS... When you work on the srv (seting up...) , do you issue the same problem?

Could U pls let me know the parameters to tune in the O/S?

is it /etc/sysctl.conf file ?

Appreciate your help.

Hope to hear from you.

Both systems are running in the same network. Both servers have the same hostname.
But, different ips. Last night, I assigned the ip address of the current server to New Hp server. Then, It had a massive progress. It is fast NOW. But, Still while comparing to current Server, This Hp server is still A LITTLE BIT slow. I think If I TUNE some more, It will be OKAY for Production use.

there are some scalix directories under /opt . I did NOT rsync these directories. What can u say about these directories? If I rsysnc these, Will the performance be better?

These parts of scalix are still slow.

If I login to webmail, If I go to inbox, sent items, drafts etc, If I click a message, It STILL takes some time to LOAD. Earlier(before changing the ip), It was QUITE SLOW. But, After changing the ip, It has a improvement.

But, Still a little bit slow, while comparing to the current server running on a Normal PC. This is the MOST important part. If this is OKAY, I will be able to put this in to production use. Then, I hope users will be able to use as USUAL.

Hope to hear from you.

There are too many of them...

There are 1000 settings to be done regarding to OS. If this is LInux problem. It might be just scalix...

Follow the document on the wiki regarding an IP address change. You may actually still be connecting to services running on the other server.

That was what i was thinking was happening.

also tuning the os, while helpful, should not be necessary especially if you never tuned the OS before on the ordinary pc. Your problem is not hardware or OS related.

As Valerion suggests it is likely that your hp server's build was picking up imap connections (SWA) from the live server and not running locally because the ip address was different and the config was still set for the old one.

/opt/scalix is just binaries, so no impact from those directories and no need to rsync.

Follow the wiki article to reset the system to your new ip. And, to be completely sure you are talking to the hp server while browsing SWA the hp server i would clear all the imap caches for users. There's a wiki article for that aswell.

and remember that, depending on how much mail you bought across, postgres will be indexing messages when you first sign in for all users. So you can expect slowness initially. How long it lasts depends on how big your mailstore is.

Hi ALL,

I finally migrated the Scalix Server to NEW HP Server. After Changing the ip address, System became better than the Scalix Server running on the NORMAL PC. It was exactly I expected.

The below link helped me.

http://www.scalix.com/wiki/index.php?ti ... s/ChangeIP

Users are happy with its performance.

Thanks a LOT.
