SOLVED: Emails coming thru blank....

I am setting up a new e-commerce server. It will send emails to buyers confirming their purchase. The few test 'purchases' I've run will send an email as expected. But when it arrives, all I see is the senders address. Outlook shows a 'paper clip' like there is supposed to be an attachement, but there is none. The email size is reading 10-12k, so there got to be something in there. I need to know if this is an Outlook problem, a Scalix problem, or an shopping cart software problem.

Hi Mike,

Have you doine any debugging on this by directing the Confirmation Message to another mail system such as gmail or Yahoo mail? What does the message look like there? Is it just a text message or some type of a rich MIME message?

When I direct the messages to my Hotmail, they look fine. Interestingly, I posted a similar problem a month or so ago. In that case, notifications from Paypal were coming through blank in SWA, but not in Outlook. I never was able to get that one resolved either.

So, tried reading this same message from SWA, and it shows an attachment for a fraction of a second and then displays the email normally. Odd.... it's exactly the opposite problem.

Hi Mike,

We'll need to see a sample of the message to determine what might be wrong here. Can you use something like Thunderbird in IMAP mode, logon to the Scalix mailbox, select the Confirmation Messages, then tell it to Display Message Source. Copy and paste that message here and we'll take a look at it.

Okay, I have here the source from two emails. The first is generated by Squirrelcart, which displays fine through SWA but is blank in OL. The second is from Paypal, which is blank in SWA, but fine in OL. Good luck ;)

Hi Mike,

The first message (from Squirrelcart) is generating a blank text/plain part at the end of the message and that's what's being displayed. If I removed that from the MIME message, it displays fine. So, I would check with the Squirrelcart folks and find out what the purpose of that blank body is.

The second message displays fine in Outlook, SWA and Thunderbird on my system, which likely means the problem has been fixed in Scalix 10.0. In Scalix 10.0 we've fixed various issues with embedded images, so once that version is released, it's likely you won't have that problem any longer.

Okay this one took awhile....

Regarding the first email (the one that appears in SWA but not Outlook), I'm not really sure what you mean by "generating a blank text/plain part at the end of the message". I see this at the end:

Is that what you mean? The SquirrelCart people are telling me that no one else has ever reporting anything like this. I sent them the source, and they don't see any problem with it. And in light of the other incoming emails that only seem to have problems when coming from a Scalix server, I am inclined to beleive this is a Scalix problem.

I will probably be making the upgrade to v10 this weekend. Do you think it will solve this? If not that really sucks.

I did a full text search for every file in version 2.1.4, and cannot locate the text "US-ASCII". An extra boundary is being added as well, so something is reading the email, locating the boundary from the headers, and then adding that text/plain section.

It seems that Scalix is somehow adding the US-ASCII to the email source. So maybe this is some kind of encoding problem?

Hi Mike,

The only way we'll know for certain what is being sent to us from SquirrelCart is for you to enable SMTP Relay Debug Logging. To do that, edit your /var/opt/scalix/sys/smtpd.cfg file and add:

DEBUG_LOG=TRUE

to the bottom. Now stop and restart the SMTP Relay by typing:

omoff -d0 smtpd
omon smtpd

In the /var/opt/scalix/tmp subdirectory a new file will appear called smtpd.log which is a log of everything that is sent and recv'ed by the SMTP Relay. So, go ahead and send a message from SquirrelCart, then take a look at the log file, find the complete transaction of the messsage (from the initial HELO command to the final QUIT) and post that here. You'll also want to turn off the debug log by removing the line above and stopping and restarting the SMTP Relay again.

I have had SMTP debugging on for some time. That's where I got the source for my earlier posts. I will post the source from an recent email here. Again, these email are blank in Outlook unless I view then using IMAP or POP; then they look totally perfect. If I view them in SWA, they are readable but the tables, borders, fonts, etc are set to IE defaults so its looks really bad.

The problem is that Squirrelcart is appending an extra body part to the message.

The final part of the message shows the following:

So, there is a boundary separator followed by a end-boundary separator. This is a default body part which we render as plain text.

So why does it look complete perfect when the same source is received via Scalix through IMAP or POP?

I also sent the emails to my Hotmail and Gmail account. They also look fine.

I also setup Squirrelcart at home (to test this) and sent the emails through my Exchange server. It looked just fine as well.

It seems this only applies when the email is received via the Scalix Outlook Connect process.

UPDATE:

I just finished my upgrade to Version 10. I still am getting the blank emails when they are accessed through Outlook Connect. However, the emails now look perfect in SWA (they were displayed oddly before).

So now the single common denominator is the Scalix Outlook module. Is it possible that I just have a bad install of the module? Would it be a bad idea to delete and re-install it, now that I have upgraded?

Not really. I think the problem is still the message.

The difference with Outlook is that in this case the server decodes the MIME message into native Scalix message format. Obviously, because the message is not formatted correctly, this fails.

In SWA and IMAP clients, the client gets the original MIME and might be able to make some sense of it.

Do you see an error message in omshowlog or the fatal file after receiving such a message?
