Trouble recovering Scalix Messagestore after hardware fail.

Postby Hibbelharry » Wed Oct 08, 2008 9:24 am

Hi People,
i'm in trouble. We've had running 11.4.1 for a while on a fedora box which became crashy 2 days ago and totally failed the next day.

I thought this would be a good time to do a switch to centos. So i setup Centos 5.2 on a new box and I created a user and a scalix group with same uid and gid as before. The new box does also use the same dns name and ip as before. Then I installed 11.4.1 on it and verified scalix working. Then i stopped scalix services and exchanged /var/opt/scalix with my backup. Scalix services still start fine but i was unable to login neither to SWA or SAC. Then I decided to stop scalix services again and uninstall scalix by usiong the installer leaving only the messagestore, removing indexes and everything else. Then I reinstalled again and verified all services working by issuing omstat -a / -s. I'm now able to login into SAC as sxadmin and all my users are listed with their settings looking right but i'm still unable to login to SWA. Authentication seems to work because the error mesage differs when i use right/wrong login data.

Omcheck -i -d only gave me 2 or 3 small issued which i fixed up. omscan -a doesn't complain and sizes of the messageboxes seem to be right.

As a last resort i tried exporting userdata by using sxmboxexp which gives me OM 8009, initials are too long.

Anyone any hints ?

Greetings
Hibbelharry

i'm still unable to login to SWA

What happens when you try?

OM 8009, initials are too long

What are the user's initials? Is this for every user?

OM 8009 happened for every user i tried and i tried quite some while surely not all.

When i try to login I see:

Ein Fehler ist aufgetreten. Wenden Sie sich an Ihren Systemadministrator falls das Problem weiterhin besteht.

From german to english: An error occured. Contact your sysadmin.

Login via Imap states an internal errorm also not very helpful.

SWA uses IMAP, so that would suggest your problem is with IMAP, not just SWA.

If you telnet to port 143, what answers?

Anything in the omshowlog output?

Nothing meaningful there.. I tried to login to imap via telnet and Scalix offered it's normal greeting. login failed due to an internal error.

In the meanwhile I really got some improvements. I swapped the order in which i tried to set things up. After I did a cleanup, copied var/opt/scalix back from my backup and installed 11.4.1 it worked. Before this i always tried installing scalix, copying the old stuf and redo things. This way I was able to login and go through mails and calendars, sending and receiving mails worked. omcheck offered just small fixes again and omscan -a was also quite happy.

Then i tried to do some rocket science and updatee to 11.4.2, bad idea. It rendered the system useless again, failed on installing the rpms and messed things up in scalix messagestore: folders missing, moved and all crap.

i'm just going to redo what i did before and I'm in progress of copying my backup back on the system again. If I get 11.4.1 running like before I won't touch any updates again until Activesync Support arrives. Hope I'm lucky again...really.
