Scalix to Scalix Migration

Postby chrish01 » Tue Jan 31, 2006 3:24 pm

Our existing server is quite badly configured, and I will be attempting to move everything to a clean, secure installation. We will be recreating the users (as well as cleanup of the users) on the new system first. This will mean that internal user ids will change. We are also consolidating from a failed 2 ldap system to a single ldap.

We have two things that have to be migrated correctly. All of our email needs to come across cleanly. Since the user ids change, and we specifically dont want to use our existing ldap tree, copying ~scalix/ across is not an option. The second, and equally important, is that Calendars come across. I tried to copy Calendar, which is a special folder, with imapsync, and the calendar items did not come across.

Any suggestions for doing this cleanly?

I'm not sure what you're trying to achieve here.

Can you give some details about what you believe is badly configured ?

The simplest solution, if you're migrating a single server to another machine, is to copy /var/opt/scalix. You retain all the benefits of shared single copies of messages. To copy mailboxes individually will increase the disk usage on the new server.

When you talk about internal user IDs, do you mean the Scalix User Names or the authentication IDs ?

As Scalix doesn't use LDAP trees for users, I'm suspecting that you are talking about mailnode names but I'd like to understand a little more. If you can provide an example, that would be great.

Cheers

The previous admin setup the system in a way that breaches our security policy. The performance is also quite poor, while i know the system can perform better. We are also upgrading to RHEL4 from 3. Currently, we have two ldap trees on the same host and would like to consolidate into one. Not to mention the second tree isnt even really syncing with scalix.

There are just a multitude of things to change that would lead us to desire a clean start.

Most importantly, I would like to know if i can export and import the Calendar information using the special Calendar folder via imap.

Christian, I think we have crossed lines here...

OpenLDAP has nothing to do with Scalix whether it's misconfigured or not. That's unless you are doing directory synchronisation or external authentication.

Directory synchronisation is handled through omldapsync. If you have an agreement set up, you'd be able to see a directory under /var/opt/scalix/ldapsync.

External authentication is configured by referencing om_ldap in /var/opt/scalix/sys/pam.d/ual.remote and creating a configuration file in /var/opt/scalix/sys/ called om_ldap.conf.

So, if you have LDAP trees using OpenLDAP, you can configure them however you need to, you just need to make the appropriate adjustments to the configuration on the Scalix side but this doesn't require you to rebuild all the mailboxes.

If this is something that you need advice with, given that you have a support contract with us, I'd advise that you look to engage our Professional Services team.

Cheers

Honestly, i can take care of everything except one piece. Can calendars be synced via imap. We also want to write some middleware that does this for our intranet systems.

I just wrote a script to do this for me. Apparently other sync tools are just ignoring the special folders.

I guess there is only one small issue left. Copying calendars from imap is giving me one small issue. While everything shows up correctly in the web client, outlook does not show the items.

There is no method at present to migrate calendar data via IMAP.

If you're migrating the mailboxes, using omcpoutu and omcpinu will preserve all the appropriate information.
