german translation

Postby klappank » Tue Jul 15, 2008 1:00 am

hey at all, specially to the scalix-guys,

i'm wondering where is the german translation of the Website.
All my links that i've bookmarked runs into not available at the time.
How long should this go on ?

By the side, by reading many threads i think there are many people from germany. Is there a possibility to make a section in german (this could be a thing for florian i guess)

Thanks for your answers.

I'll have to defer that question to the marketing guys and by quick checking they don't have an ETA for this right now as they are busy with other stuff. Stay tuned.

One question, though, that I would have for you is what specific pages you have bookmarked into and use on a regular basis? Most of the translated content of the website is really product information and marketing stuff, so probably a one-time read. IIRC all the live content (Forums, Wiki, product documentation, etc., etc.) is English-only anyway.

You are right, this forum has quite a big German membership. However, the idea of splitting off a German forum has been discussed before - you will probably find a couple of threads on the forum about this - and my personal position has always been that I would not personally support this.

It really creates two separate information spaces, partitions the information and actually makes it harder for people to search for and find the things that they are looking for; keep in mind that there would not be automatic translation and synchronization, so when looking through what's there you would always have to look in two places and languages or you would not do that and then miss out on information relevant to you. We have quite a large community, but it's not large enough to divide it's activity in half and still be happy on both sides (assuming a 50:50 split, which is probably not even true, so the German minority would actually even suffer more).

I see people from South Africa (who I know personally) answering questions from someone in Germany, and I see people known to be located in Austria helping others down under in Australia - this would all be killed or at least severly reduced.

I don't think that's a good thing for anyone.

Therefore, it would need a pretty strong vote here to convince me to create a German-only board on the forum, and you won't find me contributing to it personally. I may want to add that although I am a native German most of my written communication is English these days and I sometimes find it easier than my own tongue..... :-)

Cheers,
Florian.
