Attaching scalix on top of a running mailserver

Postby thn80 » Wed Feb 13, 2008 3:52 pm

Hello,

I want to use scalix in the future, but at the moment I have a question and don't find an answer.
If I have a running mailserver with sendmail, spamassassin and clam-av is it possible to install scalix on top of this solution?
I read that scalix has it's own RULES files to include spam- and av-filters.
But I want sendmail to do all this work....scalix should only add the webinterface for e-mail, contacts and tasks and provide the interfaces for outlook (mail, contacts, calender).

Is this possible with scalix?

And what's about the user management? Do I have to add/change users in both parts (sendmail and scalix)? This question interessts me in a normal scalix installation and in the configuration described above.

Thank you very much,

Thomas

First you need a basic understanding of how scalix/sendmail coexist:
1) Scalix *does not send email*, sendmail does.
2) Scalix doesn't function without sendmail (or some other MTA, such as postfix).
3) You should not expected from scalix/sendmail the same kind of relationship that squirelmail/sendmail have for example.
4) Scalix is not a "wrapper" to the traditional unix/linux mail system. Scalix is a complete mail system on its own merits.

Now to your questions:
Is this possible with scalix?
Yes, even with Scalix, the spamassassin and clam-av features are handled by sendmail
And what's about the user management? Do I have to add/change users in both parts (sendmail and scalix)?
No. Once you install scalix, the mailstore component of sendmail (flat unix file system: /var/spool/mail/$user, /home/$user/mailfolder) and user authentication mechanism that are normally handled by the /etc/passwd file of the server get replaced by scalix..

Bottom line, if you have to migrate users and mailboxes from the traditional sendmail/linux arrangement to scalix, you can not keep both systems live at the same time on the same server. There will be port conflicts.
