ERROR: Bad magic number in an item header record.

Postby hxtechnologies » Tue Jan 29, 2008 7:10 pm

Hello,

I have a user who can no longer receive email. The email is returned to the sender. The scalix logs show the following problems with the mailbox for the user. I have also tried to run omscan, but that was unable to complete the scan of the user's mailbox. The errors from the log are below: Does anyone have any input on what may be causing this?

I can tell you that I have experienced the same error.

See post viewtopic.php?t=9933

I've read in the forums that this is usually due to a corrupt message or file. I've also been told off-line by folks at Scalix that while its pretty much impossible to tell in advance whether this is a recoverable error, given the architecture and store format of Scalix, it is highly unlikely that this kind of corruption goes beyond a single item or folder.

I'm not sure how to identify the corrupt file or folder (even the folks at Scalix admit that its a bit of black magic how to identify the correct one). But -- it appears -- that the solution once the corrupt file or folder is identified is to use low-level tools such as omcontain to fix or delete the item in question.

Hope this helps a little.

If you want to identify where the mail item is located, you could try omdref (no man page)

omdref 000624ebc2ab4002

Thanks Mick,

what exactly does that command do?

It finds a message in the mailstore and then display the folder hierarchy for that message.
