How do i localize/detect the reason for problems?

Since i can t share calendars, i made a public folder for dates, where everyone can enter his dates.
Now i try to access this folder with Thunderbird/Lightning - with partial success.
I am not able to see any dates in lightning - unless after i added a date or i signed on at the api/dav-URL http://<server>/api/dav/ before. So i guess it could be an authentification error.

but i checked the following logs:
- omshowlog
- /var/opt/scalix/<inst>/tomcat/logs/*
- and the apache log
but no error was written. Has anyone an idea where i can find my error message?
without any error message it is hard to solve.

i m using scalix 11.3 and debian etch.
