Ahhhh, ok.... so this was meant to explain our release numbering/naming scheme as an example, not as particular planning! :-)

- 11.3 out in December
- presumably a couple more 11.x coming early to mid next year
- 12 looking like end of next year or so
- if possible, no more 11.x.1 releases, because that would mean "patch release" to fix bugs and little else and I hope we don't have to do many more of these. I'm quite sure right now that there will be no 11.2.1. :-)

I've been using CE for almost two years now. I've been using it to evaluate while my company goes through tubulent times. We are in the construction industry so our staffing varies wildly at times, usually somewhere between 30 and 70 users. Even though I have been unable to squeeze the requisite funds out of management to actually purchase scalix in this time I am fully committed to do so when I am able to. I see great inherent value and potential in this product. Every release/upgrade/patch has installed smoothly with no unanticipated downtime. With the help of the community forum I have a functional, if a little clunky, free backup system in place.

My biggest financial hurdle to making the purchase is actually not Scalix itself, but the required hardware and OS expenses required to build a supported and reliable production server. I suspect that you might see even more of those SBE-class customers become a paying reality if you could support CentOS for SBE and EE production systems.

Well, you will be happy to hear that we will, in 11.3, support CentOS 4.x and 5.x for evaluation purposes, this means that you'll no longer need to tweak the system to get the installer to continue.

This also means that our support is getting ready to take it on for good; we'll then fully certify it for 11.4!

Hope this helps and many thanks for your comments!

VPS enviroment: how can we tune Scalix performance?

I'm very interested in what tuning practices there are for Scalix - most notably for using on hosted (VPS) environments (we're currently using the Community version of 11.2 on RHEL4). While the system generally operates well on our hosted VPS, we must be constantly vigilant to the number of open files on the system, as the ceiling is lower than a dedicated server (for us the ceiling for numfile is about 24K). In peak times (with about 15 + users) we hit this ceiling often, necessitating a system restart!

I've scoured the forums and documentation to see if we can glean any tips or tricks for lowering the need for so many open file handles, and have tried a number of things (open file limits for the root and scalix users, turning down the number of imap connections per second, aggressively limiting memory or open files for java/tomcat (NOT a good idea)). Nothing yet has hit the mark to keep the system at a 'comfortable' level of operation during peak times. (Could the indexing service be gobbling up the numfile resources?)

When are these best practices scheduled to be released? Is it possible to get an early look?

Is there anything documented yet? I have been struggling with this for quite some time now. As an enterprise customer, it would be really nice if see some of this documentation. I don't care if it's not complete or in draft form or whatever.

Unfortunately no, at least not publicly. However, given that I've heard your name before, I'm quite sure that you can get a hand on something if you talk to your usual Scalix technical contact... .-)

release date

Postby seany » Tue Jan 08, 2008 5:34 am

Hi,

Without wishing to sound like a scratched record, do we have an ETA for 11.3 yet please? We have hardware and Scalix ordered, plus a consultant coming over on Thursday to go through some stuff with us, but we can't proceed without the iCal stuff really.

Thanks and happy new year,

Sean

Well, a little bit like a scratched record you *do* sound. :-) I'll stick with the same answer - it's ready when it's ready.

- QA has signed off the release and testing is finished
- The files are up on the staging servers
- Now it's up to marketing and communications to flip the switch - this in itself is a major operation, with all the notifications we have to send, etc.

Given all of the above, I think it's fair to say that it'll haven Really Soon (TM), as promised. Committing to this week is probably not far-fetched. :-)

Thanks. Apologies for the repeats, but all it takes is a progress report to satisfy me :)

Thank you Florian and congrats :)

I take it commercial customers such as ourselves should wait for an email from our reseller?

well, if your name is registered as a contact in our database, you should actually receive a download link directly today.

if you don't, please ping me by personal message or email with your contact details and company name and i will check why our database is not up to date.

that's probably because your libical is already up to date. please show the complete log. worst case, please run the installer with "--debug" and post the resulting /var/log/scalix-installer log file.

(libical was available in previous releases as well)
