Question on 11.3

Will this run on Fedora 7 and if so I am going to guess that 11.4 will only run on Fedora 8?

If this has been discussed please excuse me - thank you

This is quite probable, you will need to upgrade fedora with each (or each second) scalix release.

This is why it's recommended to use a enterprise distribution.

We are happy with centos 5.

Please also note that 11.3 *will* support CentOS officially for Evaluation/Community purposes, with the goal to support it for full production in a later release. This is then the same initial level of support that we provide for Fedora, with a better future to come.

So in case you want to go with a free release with no included commercial support, CentOS is the clear recommendation from my side as well.

It's nice to know the good news specially for CENTOS user like me.

Just a quick questions,
In terms of SWA, will Safari version 3 be supported on scalix 11.3?
How about oulook forms?

Thanks!

Not yet - market share is quite too small right now and even many Mac users (like myself, and that's not only because of SWA) use Firefox as their primary browser. With this being said, Webkit support (which basically means Safari) is something we aim for, just to complete our freedom of choice story in that corner.

How about oulook forms?

Based on lack of demand and again strategy (think: clients of choice, and this is a feature very specific to one client) - nothing planned at this time.

Florian:

Will 11.3 document all the functions, error messages and configuration files that previously did not have any documentation?

Regards,

Andrew

As long as you don't spell out specifically what you're looking for, I can't answer that question - see my response to your other post.

Everything that's there - most likely not. More and where it's needed - as long as we know what's missing, we'll try.

Well, being a physicist (therefore with a slight mathematical background), I'm not sure that I can agree that x<1/3 is already x~1/2.

The honest answer is - can't say. The release is currently undergoing final QA and is good to go when QA signs off - this has a target time schedule, but eventually they are free to decide to do that whenever they feel ok with the quality and don't foresee any problems.

My feel is that we're talking early next week, but again, can't say for sure, it's just the way it works.

All,

as I've started the 11.3 discussion here, let me use this particular place to spread the latest news.

With feedback from development, we've decided yesterday to move the release of Scalix 11.3 into early next year, presumably 2nd week of January.

The reason for this were two areas that we didn't feel we knew enough about to release this product version.

The first issue was introduced by the pretty unexpected and early release of Microsoft's Service Pack 1 for Office 2007. This caused one issue with Support for Outlook 2007, which was subsequently investigated into, found and fixed within not much more than a day. The fact that Microsoft seems to have changed some things in SP1, however, that are able to cause issues with the connector, leads us to the conclusion that we need more thorough testing on the SP1 version before we can ship the product. This will take a number of days.

In addition, we found one issue inside the Scalix Messaging Services Web Services platform that led to some performance issues and stability concerns for heavily loaded systems with a large number of SWA users. Again, we decided that we want to further investigate into this before we declare the product gold master.

The two things would have led to a potential release date by the end of next week, as we were one week behind original schedule already (planned release date was 12/11, however, with a project running for about 3 months, an overall delay of one week given the challenges of new features is actually pretty good and very much on track).

Now, while we would all have loved to give all of you and also ourselves this piece as a christmas gift, reality speaks a different language. Based on reduced load over the holiday season, we are not as fully staffed on the support side as we are during normal times (although stuffed with sumptous christmas dinners we may well be !!), so if there had been any customer issues with upgrades, we would have been in a situation that could have become challenging.

For that reason, we're giving this some more time, possibly without further change and we'll take a break over the holidays and ship this early next year, with all the backing that this new product deserves.

Apologies for any inconvenience this may cause, wish you a great holiday season and we'll be back with more (just working on the 2008 roadmap) next year!

Hello Florian,

thanks for the status update of the 11.3 release.

I welcome this descision.

For us it's more important to have a stable bugfree system than having to install it on christmas (So I can be under the christmas tree together with the family instead of... :o )

In switzerland anyway most companies have (almost) closed from the 22.December. till 7.January. (Unfortunaly this is not true for our own company)

And you can rest assured that this was THE main driving factor behind our decision; unlike earlier this year when we really wanted to get a couple of fixes in the hands of our customers and went for the monthly release schedule of the first half of this years, I do believe that Scalix 11.2 is a fundamentally mature and solid product (not deyning there are some open issues), and so shall - and will - be 11.3, just that little extra bit better and with some nice new stuff added..... :-)

Anyway, thanks for you comment, I'm sure it was the right thing to do,
Florian.

early release of Microsoft's Service Pack 1 for Office 2007.
That is the real good news. It means we can finally start to plan for Office 2007 deployment, and we know that many of the bugs may have been fixed. Which means I'll finally install Office 2007 for testing on my system, and coincide that with 11.3 of scalix. On that note, earlier today we had already made the decision to freeze any configuration changes on our systems for the remainder of the year, so scalix announcement (or lack of it) would not have changed anything anyways. But it's good to know a responsible decision was made on their part.
