DNS resolution fails

Postby o_rakel » Wed Nov 28, 2007 6:30 am

hi,
I am evaluation Scalix on Fedora7.
I have the problem, that the installer tells me that "Network check failed -- could not find a host name that matches an IP adress -- IP adress 192.168.100.111 could not be identified as this host name scalix.serragrup.local

Thats how my files are:

The /etc/hosts is correct,:

[root@scalix ~]# cat /etc/hosts
# Do not remove the following line, or various programs
# that require network functionality will fail.

127.0.0.1 localhost.localdomain localhost
192.168.100.111 scalix.serragrup.local scalix

the /etc/sysconfig/network as well
[root@scalix ~]# cat /etc/sysconfig/network
NETWORKING=yes
HOSTNAME=scalix.serragrup.local
GATEWAY=192.168.100.150

My two Windows Domaincontrollers and Nameserver give the correct answers:
nslookup scalix.serragrup.local
Server: 192.168.100.1
Address: 192.168.100.1#53

Name: scalix.serragrup.local
Address: 192.168.100.111

[root@scalix ~]# nslookup 192.168.100.111
Server: 192.168.100.1
Address: 192.168.100.1#53

111.100.168.192.in-addr.arpa name = scalix.serragrup.local.

but I still get the error message that the DNS Configuration is wrong and the installer won't proceed
what did i forget?

thanks for your help.

BTW: I get an libical warning...

dont worry about libical, it will install that for you.

everything looks right in your setup....

what is in the following 2 files?

/etc/resolv.conf

/etc/host.conf

Also are you using any sort of "Bonjour" setup? Fedora 7 might have some default bonjour or rendezvous services started. I cant remember exactly what they are named, but they are Apple MAC based services to do with auto configuration. Someone may correct me here ;)
If they are on then they will be conflicting with ".local" as it uses that for lookups.

That's why i've switched to using ".lan" these days.

Hello,
thats what I think too, it looks all fine.
Here come the other two files:

[root@scalix ~]# cat /etc/host.conf
order hosts,bind

[root@scalix ~]# cat /etc/resolv.conf
# generated by NetworkManager, do not edit!

search serragrup.local

nameserver 192.168.100.1
nameserver 192.168.100.2
nameserver 80.58.0.33

The .local thing is unfortunately not changeable, because in spring I created a new windows domain and Active Directory and named it serragrup.local. Afterwards I thought naming it .tld or .lan would have been better, but now I have to live with it.

Regarding Bonjour: If it is not installed by default while copying the live CD, I have not installed it. (The package manager does not show it)
So where does this DNS error come from?

Regarding Fedora7 I just wanted to evaluate scalix, without the hassle of installing it on CentOs5, which we have on our production mail server.
I wonder, why everybody here recommends installing Scalix on Centos, but this is not officially supported by scalix.... :?

so should i change to CEntos 5 to use the better / more stable Red Hat? :?:

yep that helps narrow it down.

From above it is only detecting the loopback device.

A normal log will have something like.....

2007-11-29 16:27:27,682 INFO Network interface is eth0

Can you verify that eth0 or eth1, whichever your machine happens to be is up and running?

whats the output of ifconfig -a?

thus the problem is not dns as such, but the fact that it cant see an ethernet device.

Is there any firewalling or selinux enabled that might be getting in the way?

What do these commands show?

iptables -L

getenforce

I was a bit too close to the screen so that I overlooked it...
why does he tell me that he is using the .111 IP but actually is catching a DHCP IP (the DHCP server confirms that....)

and the eth0 is working : I am sitting at this machine, while I am typing these lines.

IPTABLES + SELINUX desactivated.
Will restart the machine and see if it catches again DHCP...

SOLVED

Postby o_rakel » Thu Nov 29, 2007 5:55 am

Hi,

it was the DHCP Server which caused the confusion:
After the first install the fedora machine was on DHCP and the DHCP server has long lease times (5 days).
So after changing it to static IP 111 and rebooting it, the DHCP Server granted again the .237 IP.
Therefore I could not see any fault on the fedora machine, because there were no faults.
I just killed the old DHCP lease and rebooted and now it has the static 111 IP

while I am typing this the scalix installer is running in parellel and installing scalix ;-)

the installer first looks at your hostname, then tries to resolve it, either by /etc/hosts or dns. In your case hosts first, then dns.
Once it knows the ip it searches your machine for interfaces that match.

it doesn't find a match because eth0 is dhcp.

You need static ip anyway for scalix, Set it to static and you'll be flying ;)

as written above it had a static ip... but the lease time was the problem.... ;-)

some time these little things cause great confusion...
