CentOS & Scalix

Hi all,

I'm totally new to Scalix and after reading a bit through this forum I have to say I'm a bit confused by choosing the right Linux Distro. I will run the whole setup on a VMWare Server. After what I found here it seems to be best to go with CentOS instead of Fedora, even Fedora is officialy supported.

So here are some of my questions:

- Which version of CentOS is best to use for Scalix 11.2 Community Edition?
- Which version of the Community Edition of Scalix do I need? Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5.0?
- Is there a good Howto (Link?) for all the tricks and stuff needed to get Scalix running on CentOS?

Those things should do the first step to get me into the topic. I thank you all in advance as there is quite some pressure on me about this project at the moment.

Officially CentOS is not supported. Unofficially I can say I have Scalix running on both CentOS 4 and CentOS 5 for testing purposes. Just use the corresponding RHEL package and either use the override-release switch or change the /etc/redhat-release file. Otherwise all the RHEL tips and tricks in the forum applies. The installer is really good, you can use it to iron out all the dependency issues.

If I have to do an install right now, I would choose CentOS 5, as RHEL 5 will have a longer supported lifespan than RHEL 4. Then again, RHEL 3 was only now officially dropped, so I think you're safe for a few years either way.

I'll second that. Go with CentOS or RedHat Enterprise or Suse Linux Enterprise.

These will provide you with the smoothest upgrade experiences.

Use CentOS if you need something free.

Stay away from Fedora and OpenSuse. It works great for testing, but you'll need to upgrade your OS at the same time you want to upgrade Scalix almost all of the time. It's a hassle that isn't worth enduring, in my opinion. And with so many moving parts, it's an much bigger risk, obviously.

Thank you very much folks for your fast reply. In this case I will try to go with CentOS 5 as it needs to be a free OS behind.
