FQDN Confusion and Mail Questions

Postby eddyedfred » Wed Nov 07, 2007 2:10 pm

hi,
sorry for this perhaps silly question, but i'm a newbie.

the scenario: i want to set up a scalix server for a network with 15 users. the mailboxes already exist at an ISP and should be used further on.

my confusion is now about the FQDN. Shall I use for the server a fqdn like server.domain.de or server.domain.local ? So the question is to use a special local domain (.local) or use the official domain from the ISP (company.de) as FQDN in the /etc/hosts file for the installation?

i want to use sendmail to send the mails and fetchmail to get mails from the pop3 mailboxes. so if i use a special .local domain, do i have to use masquerading while sending with sendmail?

i would be happy if somebody can bring some light to my mind.
thanks very much!

What you'll probably want is to name the machine so that at least the domain and TLD are in ine with what you'll want email for.

So if you want to deliver email to you@domain.local then I'd name the server mail.domain.local. This probably isn't what you want though.

You PROBABLY want you@domain.com, and therefore, I'd name the server mail.domain.com. Then you can also add a cname or alias record to point mail.domain.local at mail.domain.com.

But by using the "real" name, you'll be able to point clients at mail.domain.com for their email, and have it work when they are on the road, or when they're in the office. (Assuming connectivity is in place...)

Kev.
