"Best" filesystem for /var/opt/scalix/... ?

Hello,

we are actually using scalix 11.1.0.x with OpenSuse 10.1.
Since we are looking into upgrading to scalix 11.2.x we will also take the step to switch over to centos.

Currently the /var/opt/scalix filesystem is on it's own partition, formated with reiserfs.
We have the problem that the webinterface is horribly slow when we go into a folder.

Looking at the server monitor we see very heavy disk activity while the folder is opened.
In top the system is waiting for IO between 20 and 90%, cpu load is arround 10%, with smal peaks to 70%.


Inday things to do/not do with the filesystem ?

Either EXT3 or ReiserFS is fine.

Personally, I'd be moderately concerned about the future of Reiser, even though IMHO it is much better than EXT3. Therefore, I'd probably recommend going wth EXT3. You won't have a choice for Reiser with Cent anyway, IIRC.

Making your FS faster will be simplest to accomplish using things like RAID. I believe Scalix recommends 1+0. Mirroring has also worked very well for me on smaller installations. Make sure your RAID card has RAM in it.

Having said all of that, the biggest difference that I could recommend is using different spindles for the OS's Swap, as well as for Scalix's temp and tmp directories.

I know it's recommended that you use LVM for backups, but my "gut feel" (I've never timed it) is that this is slow. If you have a small enough network that you can stop the server and make the backup, I'd go that route. If you're on a SAN, it will likely provide the ability to snapshot a partition MUCH better than using LVM will, though it may be more complex to set it up.

Yeah even when you boot up and type linux reiserfs it will not give you the option when creating the partitions.
