The only failover is that Heartbeat will "advertise" a common IP address for the two machines
but how would you archieve failover with scalix without data being shared or replicated?

We also debated this issue, and one "cheap" solution turns out to be "leasing" disk space from a 3rd party much larger, failsafe, snapshot, backup, fast raid, centralized storage via *iSCSI*

I'm sorry, but I'm going to disagree with you. The pricing option is not cheap.

I live in a country where we pay ZAR 7.20 per 1USD, thus this exercise would cost me ZAR21.600!!!! I can't justify that kind of money if Linux, sendmail & heartbeat is free, just to have failover on your product, for 5 users, just because I want to avoid having to spend a day recovering a crashed server and we do have some spare server hardware to use which is worth about $300! There's no logic behind this approach.

well, i have just dared to compare with a comparable offering from Microsoft and in that comparison we are infact cheap. I just checked the Exchange Enterprise server prices and my estimate was rather conservative......

Cheers,

I don't see how this will work. Our setup is for a small 5 user office, in a country where bandwidth is very very expensive, and these types of providers doesn't exist natively in our country. Access to the USA is much slower, and more expensive. I don't think I'm going to continue with this project. I cannot justify the cost for a basic failover.

My suggestion is suitable to a setup in which an organization maintains a central SAMBA server for example, with a large enough common storage. This already requires a failsafe provision anyway.
The addition of the scalix servers in a heartbeat setup is just ice on the cake.
