What to do with orphans?

Postby iwt » Sat Jul 21, 2007 8:50 am

Hello everybody,

i just tried out the ommaint script from the scalix package on my server (10.0.1.24). The weekly report tells me, that orphans were found:

Orphans found ....
Orphan name Orphan type
~/data/0000007/0000c62 Data Item.
~/data/000000h/00018b6 Data Item.
~/data/000000k/00013j1 Data Item.
~/data/000000n/0001921 Data Item.
~/data/000000o/00018i2 Data Item.
~/data/000000p/00011ou Data Item.

Bad extensions ....

Owner Info : Test Tester/ group, afv/CN=Test Tester
Parent Container : ~/data/0000011/0000r0s:1, RecNum : 1
Child Affected : ~/data/000000o/00018k3
Child Subject : Testentry+

Is there something i have to do, e.g. deleting the orphans? And how to do this?

ommaint runs omscan to generate this report for you. These switches willl do it.

omscan -Aafx

the -f say fix data inconsistencies, move orphans etc.
-x says do extended checking also.

Its all in the manpage of omscan.

I normally change ommaint to do the above, but thats my decision. I have a bug report against ommaint to enhance it so that it does more than just reporting. The scalix techs explain why ommaint only reports by default....

Hi,
What are 'orphans' and how do they get created?
Also if
omscan -Aavfx
is used daily, should you see many orphans listed as omscan runs? are the orphans purged out or not? does any of this make sense :o)

The following thread explains orphans.

There shouldn't be too many orphans if you run omscan (ommaint) frequently with the options to fix orphans.
