missing emails from time to time...

Postby slm17 » Tue Jul 17, 2007 5:02 am

hi there

i' ve setted up a scalix 11 (community edition) server a few weeks ago and for testing if everything works well it's just running with a few users at the moment.
most of things worked perfect out of the box, but now i noticed strange behaviors with emails not delivered to the users.

i cannot find a clear pattern when emails got lost.
for testing i sent myself mails from a gmail and some other webmail accounts. three times the behavior was that the first message sent did not arrive. then a second one with exactly the same content worked. third etc as well.

it looks like the email messages come quite far - these are some lines from the maillog, one from a successfully delivered email, one from a failed one.

Code: Select all

Avoid relying on *gmail* to conduct any tests. We're been having problems with them for almost a month now, unlike any other ISP's. Usually getting the messages below on the sender side:

>This is an automatically generated Delivery Status Notification THIS IS
>A WARNING MESSAGE ONLY.
>YOU DO NOT NEED TO RESEND YOUR MESSAGE.
>Delivery to the following recipient has been delayed:
> user@domain.com
>Message will be retried for 2 more day(s) Technical details of
>temporary failure:
>TEMP_FAILURE: Unspecified Error (SENT_EHLO): Connection timed out

So far we could not find the reason for this, or how to fix.

This post actually gave me the motivation to seek resolution for this gmail problem. We eventually found out that the *smart defense* settings for smtp bad commands on our CheckPoint firewall was the offender. We had to disable it. In fact there were several instances in which we didn't even receive a notification that emails were being blocked.
