Backing up Adressbook, ToDos and Calendar

Postby bezibaerchen » Wed Apr 18, 2007 11:14 am

Hi there,

we are evaluating Scalix for a bigger project. ATM, I am about figuring out the backup-part on which I still have some questions:

I see, that I can backup mailboxes on user base via sxmboxexp so I will do that as one part in my script.
I plan to also backup /var/-part (sure).

What I don't get is: Where or rather how can I do a user based backup of calendar and adressbook?

Let me draw the following scenario(s):

User X calls in IT "Waaah, I accidentally deleted mail foo."
Mail isn't restorable via built-in restore feature, as the store was already emptied.
Well, no problem, we backuped with sxmboxexp, so we pull the corresponding path from our central backup-server, restore the complete mailbox it to a - let me call it that way - restore-mailbox and then give the user access to that mailbox and so the mail can be moved backed. Problem solved.

User Y calls in IT "Waah, I accidentally deleted appointment bar."
Same as above, we need it from backup. But: How can I manage that?

at last, user Z calls in IT and (surely) accidentally deleted contact foo_bar.
Same question as above.

So, are there any hints how I can achieve that?

Greetings,

Benni

If you make the effort to read the man page for sxmboxexp it'll be definitely a bit more clear for you. But anyway here is the info which you need:

sxmboxexp copies the contents of folders to an archive file. The folders can either be the private folders of an individual user or Public folders.

All a user´s private folders or all Public folders can be copied, or individual folders can be either selected or excluded when data is being stored. The sxmboxlist command can be run to list folders in a mail-box to produce a listing with folder ids that can be used for selection.

So run sxmboxlist - u "username" and you'll get a list like this:

F-0000000001 Inbox
F-0000000002 Outbox
F-0000000003 Sent Items
F-0000001265 Deleted Items
F-0000006082 Calendar
F-0000006083 Contacts
F-0000006084 Journal
F-0000006085 Notes
F-0000006086 Tasks
F-0000006088 Drafts
F-0000006092 Junk E-mail
F-0000017889 RSS Feeds

The items on the left are the folder IDs. Then with sxmboxexp -f you can select which folders' IDs you want to export and backup.

Thanks a lot swordfish, I'll be back at the customers site today and test this stuff. You made my day as (if I read this one correctly) sxmboxexp not only exports mails but also contacts, notes, calender and tasks.

I tried to find the man page, but "man sxmboxexp" says theres no manpage available. Sorry for that.

Again: Thanks a lot dude.

If you are serious about using Scalix, you need to find out why the man pages are not installed and fix the issue. Many things are not explained in the Scalix documentation and you need to read them from the man pages.

Managed to read the man-page now. Thanks again
