That's interesting.

The "host" command should be strictly a lookup command; btw - it works over DNS only, so as long as you don't have your internal machine names registered in DNS, it does not have to work and can safely be ignored.

The reaction of the hostname command to it is strange, though; it might suggest that there is some common cache.

I would have to try to reproduce.

For the time being, could you please just run the Scalix Installer right after reboot and see where you get? I believe it uses the hostname command to do some of it's checks, therefore it might rely heavily on it's output, which, as an IP address is incorrect.

Cheers,
Florian.

Java is easy... go to java.sun.com, download the 1.4.2_09 J2SDK, without Netbeans as a .rpm.bin, copy the file to your linux box, unpack the self extracing archive file using something like a "bash j2sdk...." command line, then install the rpm using rpm -ivh j2d...*.rpm. Eventually, you should run "updatedb" affter that to refresh your file location cache, so that the installer will pick it up.

Enjoy evaluating Scalix.
Florian.

Getting there..

All installed OK

Can access webmail and sac, but not log on.

"The administation server is not responding"

I've seen the link about adding

-Djava.net.preferIPv4Stack=true to the setclasspath.sh

but I'm not sure where in the file to add it.

Could someone post the file so I can see where to put the command?

During the install the defaults were accepted

The warnings are ok, they just indicate that this is a new system. :-)

The setclasspath.sh file can be found in <whereveryouinstalledtomcat>/bin/setclasspath.sh and this must be added to the JAVA_OPTIONS line.

Cheers,
Florian.

Warnings are ok - good!

I tried

# Added by Scalix Wizard version 9.4.0.53 (do not remove any of this section)
JAVA_HOME=/usr/java/j2sdk1.4.2_09
$JAVA_OPTS= -Djava.net.preferIPv4Stack=true

# End of added Scalix Wizard entries
# -----------------------------------------------------------------------------
# Set CLASSPATH and Java options
#
# $Id: setclasspath.sh,v 1.7.2.1 2004/08/21 15:49:50 yoavs Exp $
# -----------------------------------------------------------------------------

# Make sure prerequisite environment variables are set

But it gives....

[root@scalix bin]# ./catalina.sh run
//root/jakarta-tomcat-5.0.28/bin/setclasspath.sh: line 3: =: command not found
Using CATALINA_BASE: //root/jakarta-tomcat-5.0.28
Using CATALINA_HOME: //root/jakarta-tomcat-5.0.28
Using CATALINA_TMPDIR: //root/jakarta-tomcat-5.0.28/temp
Using JAVA_HOME: /usr/java/j2sdk1.4.2_09

I guess its not in the correct place in the file!

No...

it just needs to look like this:

Code: Select all

# Added by Scalix Wizard version ......
JAVA_HOME=/usr/java/j2sdk1.4.2_09
JAVA_OPTS="-server -Djava.net.preferIPv4Stack=true -Xms256m -Xmx256m"
# End of added Scalix Wizard entries

E.g. the $ sign at the beginning of the line you added is not correct. Also, I was incorrect, it's just OPTS, not OPTIONS.

Cheers,
Florian.

Thanks - that got rid of the startup errors.

Just rebooting and we'll see what happens!

Cheers

All sorted - well almost.

Can access the configuration and webmail etc etc.

Just trying to add a fetchmail entry to pull the email into the server, from a test account.

Using webmin for ease - I'm still quite to Linux etc.

I create the /fetchmailrc (copied from another working server)

I get...

"Checking for mail on server(s) with command fetchmail -v -f '/home/Matthew Humphreys/.fetchmailrc' ..

su: /bin/sh: Permission denied

.. checking failed! "

Is this simple to fix.

Its a default FC4 install with only scalix and webmin added.

Many thanks - I guess this thread will be very useful for other beginners now!

as for the inavailability of webmail and sac... i assume you haven't integrated your tomcat in your system startup.

please check out the "tomcat" script in the admin_resource_kit subdirectory of the tar file that you downloaded.

cheers,
Florian.

you probably were "root" when you edited the file /home/Matthew Humphreys/.fetchmailrc.

Do an ll /home/Matthew Humphreys/.fetchmailrc and check the owner.

Cheers,

Sascha.

Have changed the ownership

[root@scalix ~]# ll /home/Matthew\ Humphreys/.fetchmailrc -rw-r--r-- 1 Matthew Humphreys root 74 Oct 31 10:45 /home/Matthew Humphreys/.fetchmailrc
[root@scalix ~]#

[root@scalix ~]# fetchmail -v -f '/home/Matthew Humphreys/.fetchmailrc'
File /home/Matthew Humphreys/.fetchmailrc must have no more than -rwx--x--- (0710) permissions.
[root@scalix ~]#

Never seen that error message before.

Just to confirm all the web access control panels and webmail all work now - many thanks to Florian for his patience!

If I change the ownership to root,

[root@scalix ~]# fetchmail -v -f '/home/Matthew Humphreys/.fetchmailrc'
fetchmail: 6.2.5 querying mailhost.spamjab.com (protocol POP3) at Mon 31 Oct 2005 11:30:47 AM GMT: poll started
fetchmail: POP3< +OK POP3 storage-01.servers.spamjab.com v2003.83rh server ready
fetchmail: POP3> CAPA
fetchmail: POP3< +OK Capability list follows:
fetchmail: POP3< TOP
fetchmail: POP3< LOGIN-DELAY 180
fetchmail: POP3< UIDL
fetchmail: POP3< STLS
fetchmail: POP3< USER
fetchmail: POP3< SASL LOGIN
fetchmail: POP3< .
fetchmail: POP3> STLS
fetchmail: POP3< +OK STLS completed

it justs stays at this point.

But running fetchmail via webmin (also logged in as root) still gives

Checking for mail on server(s) with command fetchmail -v -f '/home/Matthew Humphreys/.fetchmailrc' ..

su: /bin/sh: Permission denied

.. checking failed!

Very confusing....

That is because the user webmin runs this script and it has no rights to do so.
