Enhancement Request for Admin GUI

Postby vorlon2261 » Wed Oct 19, 2005 8:55 pm

Hi guys,

Not sure how possible this one is, but would it be possible to alter the SAC to
allow updates to accounts when users are logged in? It's kinda painful when
I have to get the user to close their email client so I can update them.

thanks!

The limitation is not so much in SAC as in the Scalix server. In the current version, you ou can change anythng except the users name, internet address, authenticatio ID and UNIX uid. Basically you can change the user's password, capabilities, user class (9.4) and do things like lock or unlock the account.

In the next version the only thing you can't change while the user is logged in is their UNIX uid. Which is nice.

The reason for the old behaviour is mainly historic. Way back when in the bad old days you couldn't change anything at all while the user was logged in. I think that at least part of the reason for that was that the logged in user wouldn't be consistent with what is stored in the authentication database. These days with IMAP clients staying around when the user is logged out and offline working for Outlook your in trouble anyway if you want any kind of consistency, but that's OK, the clients know what to do when they connect and find something has changed. The only reason you can't change the UNIX uid for a user while they're logged in is that the ownership of a bunch of files will change and the server-side processes running under the old unix UID will get all upset and break.

So anyway, the answer to your question is to just wait a while and it will all get better. To fend off your next question, I don't know when the next version will be available for download. And even if I did I couldn't tell you :)

Am not worried about when... I can survive until then. Knowing it will be fixed is enough for me. ;-)

Well, I can add to that that it will not be days, but also certainly not years! ;-) No, seriously, as of this point, General Availability for the next release is somehow scheduled for Q1/2006. This release will contain the changes John is mentioning. I'm super-happy to get this as well, independent of the historical reasons for these limitations.

Cheers,
Florian.

Must say I like the advancements you all are making on the admin GUI. There are still a few things I would like to see:

The ability to set service levels in the Admin console. This will make it easier for days when the primary admin is on vacation and someone fills in to add a new user but isnt comfortable with ssh'ing into the scalix server and setting the correct service level.

I think, for the same reason above, that being able to view the sendmail log via the GUI would be nice too.

And of course I think single user backup/restore options in the GUI would be slick too.

That's not tooooo much to ask for is it?

Again, kudos on the great work you have done so far. The admin GUI has come along way since I first installed version 9.

John
