Migrate from Exchange 2000 to Scalix

Postby thejoker101 » Fri Sep 02, 2005 11:02 am

We have about 25 users, not that many, that I'm moving to the new scalix server. I'm just about to the point where I need to migrate all the emails from the exchange server to the scalix server. I've been reading up on it in the knowledgebase, but I'm still a little confused.

All I'm moving is their emails, we don't have any calendars or anything else. Everyone connects to the server via IMAP (Thunderbird). This seems like it shouldn't be that hard.

Here is what I'm confused about: from what I read, there are two ways of migrating users, 1) exporting to .pst then importing into scalix via some 3rd party software, which costs money per user and by location. And 2) Something callied ommigu which connects to the exchange ldap and does it's import/conversion that way.

Is that correct?

For Exchange migrations, our migration tool is EShuttle from Stellar Technologies. This requires purchase of a license to be able to use the tool.

This also provides migration from IMAP to IMAP.

ommigu is more for mailbox provisioning based on user data from the Windows server, it does not provide the ability to migrate the mailboxes.

Because of the number of users you have and the fact that they all use Thunderbird, you should be able to configure an additional mail account within Thunderbird which will allow you to drag and drop the messages from the Exchange server to Scalix.

Note than an IMAP2IMAP copy tool will, for e Exchange migration, not give you the full story:

1. Only eMail will be handed over properly. You will lose all your calendar, tasks, contacts and notes type data.
2. the eMail copied over will not be replyable as the address format will be different.

if not using EShuttle, we usually suggest going via PST export/import on the client as this will at least resolve issue 1.

On EShuttle, I don't want to talk about prices here, but it is relatively inexpensive, so cost would certainly not be prohibitive. Please contact our sales team for details!

Cheers,
Florian.
