v11 Install advice with Postgre

Postby mitz » Sat Jan 27, 2007 12:27 pm

Hi,

I'm setting up Scalix for our company. We presently have a PHP/MySQL web application on a small server. We just got a new server, and I'm installing an updated version of the web app plus Scalix.

Since we are a small company, and I really don't want to get into headaches involved with managing a mail server (i.e. spam and viruses), we plan to use Scalix for Outlook functions other than e-mail (group calendar, tasks, etc) and setup our e-mail as IMAP accounts in Outlook (the mail servers come with our company website accounts).

I initially planned to use version 10 on Fedora 4, but a driver problem forced us to install Fedora 5 instead, which also steers us toward Scalix 11. I would rather not have 2 database servers running, and I see on page 24 of the install docs that Postgre is required only for "Messaging Services" (i.e. web access to "mailbox services").

We want to be able to do group calendaring as well as send tasks within the office...does this fall under messaging, or does messaging strictly refer to e-mail?

PS my fall back is to convert the web app over to Postgre (we use PEAR DB for the DB connections). By converting to Postgre, would we be able to tap into the Scalix Postgre db for our web app (read only)? Are the calendar items and tasks stored there? Or am I better served by using the Scalix API for that?

Thanks.

Hi!

Postgres in Scalix 11 is used for indexing the cache that the webapps use and doesn't
store any messages or calendar items. To send appointment invitations use Outlook with
either ical in imap mode enabled or by installing scalix outlook connector.

Thanks,
Subir

Thanks, Subir.

Can you verify for me the options I would choose for this kind of setup, please? I'm looking at page 73 of the Scalix 11 install manual:

Scalix Server - of course
Scalix DB - no
Scalix Apache/Tomcat Conn - yes
Scalix Tomcat - yes
Scalix Messaging - no
Scalix Managment Agent - yes
Scalix Web Access - is it possible without Postgre (no caching)???
Scalix Management Services - yes
Scalix Search & Index - no
Scalix Mobile Client - no

Thanks again.

Hi!

If you would have read about Scalix Messaging Services on page 24, this package
contains the installation files for the Web-based application that provides access to
mailbox services. (Mandatory if either SWA, SIS or the Mobile Web Client are installed.
Otherwise optional).

If you install SWA, you need to install Scalix Messaging Services as well, and Scalix
Messaging Services in turn requires Scalix DB installation.

The updated list would be:
Scalix Server - of course yes
Scalix DB - no
Scalix Apache/Tomcat Conn - yes
Scalix Tomcat - yes
Scalix Messaging - no
Scalix Managment Agent - yes
Scalix Web Access - no
Scalix Management Services - yes
Scalix Search & Index - no
Scalix Mobile Client - no

I tried installing the same set of components, installation completed sucessfully. Then I
added two scalix users, installed Outlook connector 11.0.0.653, on my client machine
created a mail profile for Scalix Connector, and I was sucessfully able to send meeting
invitations between these two Scalix users using Scalix profile in Outlook.

Please feel free to reply with your concerns.

Thanks,
Subir

Subir,

Thanks. Yes, I see that now on page 24. I had been reading the docs for v10 up till now, and that's where the confusion came in. It's much more clear in the new docs.
