Scalix 10/FC4 to Scalix 11/FC5 server migration and data.

Postby KiwiStag » Mon Nov 20, 2006 11:43 pm

I'm trying to get my aging (and struggling - due to spam!) server offline and migrate the settings to a bigger Scalix 11 server with FC5 but am having a few hassles about the best way to do it so I have as little downtime as possible.

So far the FC4 server with Scalix 10 is getting bombarded with about 12000 e-mails a day (of spam) and has run out of space twice. The FC5 server with Scalix 11b is online and I was wondering if simply copying the /var/opt/scalix directory was enough?

Should I uninstall Scalix 11b and then move the directory & reinstall??

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!

Hi Kiwi,

the best way to do a simultaneous upgrade and system migration will be to uninstall Scalix on the new machine, stop Scalix on the old machine, copy /var/opt/scalix to the new machine, and reinstall the newer version on the new machine.

If you need to do a true zero downtime migration contact me offline cmeid attt scalix dottt com and we can set up a support case. It would, however, be a fairly involved process, too much for a quick howto.

That sounds great & confirms my thoughts. I can live with a few hours of downtime easily for migration (say between 10pm to 4am).
Coffee will be my friend :)

Also just wondering if any queue info in /var/spool/clientmqueue is important for scalix at all? There are currently about 9700 files in there.

Hi Bevan,

I don't even want to discuss coffee consumption - I measure mine in liters not cups ;p

Now, 9700 files in clientmqueue is really disturbing. Is your Scalix installation working? As in, are mails you send actually being delivered?

clientmqueue is the directory where mails are placed that should go out with sendmail.

clientmqueue

Scalix is working fine - it did need a reinstall a week ago after the /var partition filled up as some group ownership settings also got screwed up also. As far as I know it's all spam or failed messages set for delivery.
Most of the e-mails at present are run through pop3 then sent via our ISP's SMTP server.
Is there any way to re-queue these in this case?

Also dead.letter for spamass-milter was about 2GB the other day, I assume deleting it doesn't harm things?

Hi Bevan,

you can use omcheck to create a script to correctly set permissions throughout /var/opt/scalix - that might be a first step.

dead.letter contains undeliverable messages, you should safely be able to delete that.

if the messages are failed and cannot be sent, then don't worry about them.

Installation failure

Postby KiwiStag » Fri Nov 24, 2006 5:33 am

Upon getting most of the way through the installation it fails:

Editable paths

Postby KiwiStag » Mon Nov 27, 2006 3:05 pm

Another question re the migration:
In reference to a lot of the paths in 10 - are they now in
/var/opt/scalix/ml/s/ ?

That is correct - what used to be /var/opt/scalix is now /var/opt/scalix/$FIRST_LETTER_HOST_NAME.$LAST_LETTER_HOST_NAME/s/

This is to keep everything under the /var/opt/scalix mountpoint and make back ups easier.

Upgrade to 11.1

Postby KiwiStag » Wed Jul 04, 2007 1:47 am

After migrating yet again & installing 11.1 I noticed that the files were missing under /opt/scalix/global
Especially the httpd/scalix-web-client.conf

I'm going to pull it in following a fresh install on a virtualised server and set it up, however it's meant that even following the upgrade on the previous box the files were also missing.
