Unable to receive any external emails

Postby psbentley » Mon Oct 30, 2006 7:45 am

Hi,

Since the weekend we have been unable to recieve any external emails on our Scalix server. All of the emails are being bounced back with timeout errors communicating with our server. We are running Scalix v10.0.3.1 on FC4. We recently upgraded over a week ago to try resolve a problem with MIME errors in SWA.

Looking through the omshowlog I am seeing these errors:

ERROR Local Delivery(Local Delivery) 10.30.06 10:49:31

The fatal log is ahowing similar errors:

If I look at the Container Access Monitor logs in SAC i see:

(*.u files) and and configuration files (*.c files) which are stored in
the shared memory. These information should be loaded by omsmdm from
/var/opt/scalix/csetconv directory. A local copy will be used, and
this will reduce the performance and increase memory usage.

This is very strange as it was working fine before hand. We are still able to send emails between users hosted on the server and I am actually able to manually telnet onto port 25 and send an email to a user.

Any ideas or help would be much appreciated.

Thanks

Peter Bentley

Nslookup says your mx record points to these boxes...

verticalgroup.co.uk mail exchanger = 20 barracuda2.tarsc.net.
verticalgroup.co.uk mail exchanger = 10 barracuda.tarsc.net.

Are these barracuda boxes able to communicate with your scalix server?

Don

Hi,

The barracuda boxes are anti spam filters which then relay the email to the scalix server. I have run a test on the on the secondary MX barracuda box and got a successfull test message delivered. However the primary MX firewall doesn't appear able to connect, yet it can to another Scalix server we host. We host some local DNS servers here which have the domain and MX records set to the local scalix server so it passed all the DNS lookup tests during install, its only the public DNS that routes to our spam firewalls for relaying

If I try to send an email directly from my email client using SMTP to the scalix server's SMTP I get the following error:

The message could not be sent because one of the recipients was rejected by the server. The rejected e-mail address was 'bentleypeter@yahoo.com'. Subject 'Hello', Account: 'mail.vgtest.co.uk', Server: 'mail.vgtest.co.uk', Protocol: SMTP, Server Response: '550 Denied due to spam list', Port: 25, Secure(SSL): No, Server Error: 550, Error Number: 0x800CCC79

Has anything been added between the updates from 10.0.1 to 10.0.3.1 which filters for spam on the scalix server?

I've just amended my smtpd.cfg file to allow relaying from my IP subnet which my machine and server are on and it now lets me send but the email isn't being recieved at the other end. In fact it doesn't look like any emails have been delivered externally for the past few days since this problem started. I can send emails to internal users ok.

The outgoing issue sounds to me like a sendmail problem. Can you post a excerpt from the log file, or spot anything in there that gives a clue as to why it can't send out? Check /var/log/maillog.

Think I may have solved the problem. For some reason the server wasn't communicating with the default gateway so was only able to see services on the local subnet, of which the primary barracuda filter was not on and explains why email wasn't being sent. I've restarted the network service and am now able to see everything ok. Bit strange but not something i thought about looking at as I was able to see the server on the network ok.

Thanks for all your help though.

Regards

Pete
