Newbie install questions

Postby dg_w » Mon Jan 09, 2006 5:12 pm

:?: Sorry if these have been asked before, I did a quick search ..

Following a fresh install of a Redhat ES3 (update 5) server
I followed the install and all is up and running .. (Have not done the post install yet)
I am able to send and recieve using a POP3 \ IMAP client.
Can log into webmail but not send (is that to do with the post install setup?)
Is Spamassassin \ Antivirus etc installed with the setup ?
Is the Eval ok to use for indefinate period of time (only two users needed)
Starting tomcat at start up, there has to be an easy way ?, as a service or a sym link so I can type start tomcat at the command prompt ? how do I do it ? RHES3
Why is a /var partition needed , can the software not write to the /var directory in a default /boot / and swap system ?
On install setup complained about my hosts , what should the server /etc/host file look like (regards 127.0.0.1 and my server address 10.0.0.2 ?)

Many Thanks All I appreciate the help

Check your /var/opt/scalix/sys/smtpd.cfg file and make sure your Scalix server is listed with a RELAY accept line. It's likely you don't have your reverse DNS setup properly otherwise the IP address would have been put in automatically.

Code: Select all

Is Spamassassin \ Antivirus etc installed with the setup ?

No, but there are links peppered throughout the forum to the Spamassassin Integration technote. Take a look at the first message in the Scalix Server forum for details.

Is the Eval ok to use for indefinate period of time (only two users needed)

No, the Eval software is licensed for 90 days, although your Sales Rep can give you an extension. The Community Edition, however, can be used for an indefinite period of time.

In the admin_resource_kit subdirectory you'll find a tomcat startup script that can be put into your /etc/init.d so it starts up automatically.

Why is a /var partition needed , can the software not write to the /var directory in a default /boot / and swap system ?

We highly recommend you setup your Scalix partition as a Logical Volume in order to do snapshots of your data which in turn allows you to do "live" backups of your data.

On install setup complained about my hosts , what should the server /etc/host file look like (regards 127.0.0.1 and my server address 10.0.0.2 ?)

In addition to localhost, you do want to make sure you Scalix Servers FQDN and corresponding IP address is in your /etc/hosts file.

Thanks,
Rachel

Thx Rachel

All made sense ... now all working as it should :)
The boss made one comment , he wants an Initial.surname default format ie j.smith, I dont think that was in the drop down list at install ? Is it possible to manualy change to that ? .

I ran through the Spamassassin howto ... then the SMTP server would could not be contacted :) Will play with that a bit more tomorrow .. Silly question, RD installs with clamassassin and clamd, in webmin you can configure spamassassin to work with send mail , would this work ? (Guess it adds a line into .procmail ?)

Thx Again

Hi.

You can do this by typing:

ommodiam -s 1 -D domain.com -N '"C" <g.S>'

where domain.com is your domain.

Silly question, RD installs with clamassassin and clamd, in webmin you can configure spamassassin to work with send mail , would this work ? (Guess it adds a line into .procmail ?)

I'm not really clear on the changes you're referring to here, but if you follow the Tech Note and install the SpamAssassin milter, plus the changes to your sendmail.cf file, it'll work like a champ.

Thanks,
Rachel

Trying to get SpamAssassin running on RHEL4

Postby nesx » Wed Nov 08, 2006 1:12 pm

(reposted to Server forum)
Running Scalix 10.0.0.354 on RHEL4.
Installing SpamAssassin per the Technote. Used "spamassassin" in place of 'spamd' in section 5 of the TechNote.

Cannot start spamassassin...
# service spamassassin start
Starting spamd: Could not create INET socket on 127.0.0.1:783: Address already in use (IO::Socket::INET: Address already in use) [FAILED]

Netstat shows...
# netstat -antlp | grep 783
tcp 0 0 0.0.0.0:783 0.0.0.0:* LISTEN 3145/rpc.statd

Do I need to change port for SpamAssassin or rpc, or try MailWasher?

this successfully changed the default email address...I presume there is also a way to modify the authentication name so people can log in with the same thing as their email address??? What would it be?[/quote]

At least for now, you can use your email address to log in with even if it isn't your authID. You can also use your name, assuming it's globally unique.

Scalix Tech Support could maybe give us an indication of any plans that may change this...

Thanks
Kev.
