SuSE or Redhat?

Postby felsenstern » Tue Sep 12, 2006 3:42 am

We are a small Company located in Europe/Austria, using Gnu/Linux Debian and OpenBSD on our few network devices. To deploy Scalix EE 11 next year we will buy two dell poweredge 1425, but since we never used an enterprise distro, we are very unsure about which of them we should choose. At the moment we think about getting SuSEs SLES 10 but some guy told us that RedHat is the more stable and more professional system to use in enterprise environment. Now we are a bit clueless cause we do not have the resources to evaluate booth systems in a productive environment.

Ah, the 'which distro?' question, usually guaranteed to spark lively debate! I think you'll find that for every person that dislikes SuSE you'll find someone that considers RH to be a piece of junk. However, you should definitely take a look at this thread:

FWIW I'm not a big fan of SuSE's YaST - coming from a Debian background myself I find RH's more traditional approach to configuration preferable.

Also bear in mind that CentOS 4 is as near as dammit RHEL4, so you can evaluate that easily at no cost.
