Outgoing mail problems

Postby Jon » Fri Jun 24, 2005 3:36 pm

I have two problems.

1. I cant send mail to a certain outside email account. I looked at /var/log/maillog and I get:

"Jun 24 14:07:57 server sendmail[32515]: j5OJ7tlK032512: to=<office.iri@sbcglobal.net>, delay=00:00:02, xdelay=00:00:02, mailer=esmtp, pri=121175, relay=sbcmx4.prodigy.net. [207.115.57.16], dsn=2.0.0, stat=Sent (j5OJ4RXJ020188 Message accepted for delivery)"

It looks like it sent ok but she didnt recieve it. I tried sending it from a different smtp server (other then scalix) using my same email address and she received the email fine.

2. While trying to figure out that problem, I an error that is happing over and over again. /var/log/maillog has entries similar to:

"Jun 24 13:07:41 server sendmail[31887]: j5OI7fM2031887: Milter (spamassassin): local socket name /var/run/spamass.sock unsafe
Jun 24 13:07:41 server sendmail[31887]: j5OI7fM2031887: Milter (spamassassin): to error state
Jun 24 13:07:41 server sendmail[31887]: j5OI7fM2031887: from=<googlealerts-noreply@google.com>, size=2484, class=0, nrcpts=1, msgid=<1119636396.32213.e41db13a2931f4f0.57fbe28@persist.google.com>, bodytype=8BITMIME, proto=ESMTP, daemon=MTA, relay=proxy.google.com [216.239.37.5]
Jun 24 13:07:41 server sendmail[31891]: j5OI7fM2031887: to=<jim@islandrecycling.com>, delay=00:00:00, xdelay=00:00:00, mailer=scalix, pri=122484, relay=any, dsn=2.0.0, stat=Sent (Ok)"

Is this an error or is it expected when you integrate spamassassin with scalix?

Thanks,

Jon

For help on number 2. /var/run/spamass.sock isnt there. Permissions for /var/run/ are that owner can read, write and execute and everyone else can read and execute. The folder's owner is root.

[root@server ~]# groups sa-milt

I talked to Rachel (who has been very helpfull) at scalix support and he said that my Reverse DNS record did not match my server name and that might be why I cant send to sbc email addresses. However I fixed this and I still cant send email to that site. I let the DNS changes propragate over the weekend. What else could it be?

Thanks,

Jon

So, your log shows that the message was sent successfully from the Scalix server.

Do you have any logs that show what happened to it after that ? If the message is being blocked, I'd expect to see some sort of NDN being returned to the originator. Is this the case ?

Cheers

No, the message just disappears. The sender's email account does not get a return message. I think I will call sbcglobal and yell at them. I'll keep this thread updated with my progress.

Thanks,

You should be able to telnet directly to port 25 on sbcmx4.prodigy.net and go through an SMTP conversation:

telnet sbmcmx4.prodigy.net 25
EHLO localhost
MAIL FROM: sender@domain.com
RCPT TO: office.iri@sbcglobat.net
DATA
Subject: Test

This is a test message
.
QUIT

This will indicate if the MX host is rejecting the message (which I don't believe it is based on the log you supplied). If the MX host is passing the message to another server, there is no indication that the message has been passed on successfully.

Have you enabled delivery receipts to track this ?

Cheers

Hey Dave,

The MX host is accepting the message. So the problem arrises farther down the message passing chain.

How do I enable delivery receipts?

How do I double check to see if the server name matches the Reverse DNS lookup name?

Thanks,
Jon

Which client are you using ?

When you create a new message:

If you use SWA, make sure you are on version 9.2.1. You should select the Options menu and ensure that "Delivery Receipt" is checked.

If you are using Outlook, select the Options menu and ensure that "Request a delivery receipt for this message" is checked.

If you are using Thunderbird, select the Options menu and ensure that "Return Receipt" is checked.

Cheers

However the email still did not go through. Hopes this helps you resolve this situation. From what I'm seeing everything looks proper. Could it be my scalix id does not match my email name?

Thanks,
Jon

Everything on your side indicates that the message was sent successfully. It looks like you're going to have to investigate this downstream as flp23.prodigy.net is not rejecting the message.

I figured out what was happening. When I called sbcglobal they told me that they don't filter mail and wasting an hour of my life. Which led me to think something else was wrong other then spam filtering. Finally I logged into my friends sbc account via the web and sent him test emails, I relised everything is going to the Bulk Email Folder, which doesnt appear when you use outlook. After labeling this message as not spam, everything works.

I emailed sbc telling them to take me off the spam list so I dont have to tell everyone I send an email to at sbcglobal.net to log into their email via web interface and mark my mail not as spam.

After dealing with the good folks at sbc, I want to compliment the support staff here for being so knowledgeable and helpful.

Thanks for the help!
Jon
