More disk space

The sum of the Total column from "omscan -A -u -o 0" on my Scalix 10 server is approximately 6.1 GB. However, the size of /var/opt/scalix/data is 8.2 GB. I know they're not one-for-one, but is there a way to identify (and clear out) where that other 2 GB is being used? Is there an optimization utility/technique I should be using periodically?

Try running the command again but this time also use the -e switch. This will include sizes for hidden files in the mailbox that are attached to messages. Typically, these will be additional MAPI properties or copies of the MIME of an incoming message and are outside of the user's control to be able to manage them.

Closer, but not quite...

"du -sk /var/opt/scalix/data" == 8073152
"omscan -A -u -o 0 -e" == 7151477
"omscan -A -u -o 0" == 6139492

There's still 900MB I can't account for. I hate to be nitpicky, but the reason I'm trying to track this down is that we are billing our end users based on the size of their mailboxes, and I want to be sure that the numbers I'm pulling are the most accurate to be fair to them and us. I understand that there is going to be some data overhead, but I'm just trying to understand where/why.

In your opinion, which number most closely reflects the space used by each user? Does this number correspond to what they would get by choosing Folder Size for their mailbox in Outlook?

I appreciate any input.

Just so that I have all the information, can you run the command:

and post the output. How close is that value to the size reported by regular du ?

Sure.

It looks like it's closest to the regular old "omscan -A -u -o 0" without the -e.

If you run

sxdu -b

does this account for more of the missing space ? The Public Folder data is also stored in /var/opt/scalix/data and the omscan command you ran doesn't include that total unless you specify the -b switch.

Unfortunately, no. It's only ~2MB:

Sorry for the additional post, but I can tell you that (from two user comparisons, unfortunately smaller mailboxes -- under 50MB), it looks like the value reported by Outlook's Folder Size on the mailbox most closely reflects what I get from "sxdu -a".

Unfortunately for me, that corresponds to the smaller usage amount I get from the omscans; which ultimately means that either there's 2 GB of disk space that I can't bill for, or that I've got to be prepared to justify the difference between what I report that they're using, and what they see with their own eyes on their own client.

It's funny how trying to cover my butt sounds an awful lot like whining, doesn't it?

Maybe do a du -sh * in /var/opt/scalix. This will give an indication of which directories are taking up space. The data directory should match the sxdu output (more or less).
