Problems with FROM address

Postby mabadjiev » Tue Aug 01, 2006 1:11 am

I have some users with multiple email addresses under the same account. They joined mailing lists and require to send email under specific email address. When the setup POP3 or IMAP profile using Scalix Mail Server they speciafied one of their email address BUT NOT THE MAIN one. Scalix however always overrides the outgoing messge using their main email address (first one on the list) in the FROM field.
So their email to these mailing lists gets rejected.

Is there a solution to this?
Thanks for your time.

Hi Michael,

You can change the default email address using SAC. Select the user and then move the desired email address to the top of the list. That email will then be the default one.

Cheers,
Yuri

Yuri,

The problem is that my boss has a bunch of e-mail aliases and he used to send the e-mails to various conferences from all of them. I mean that he need to be able to select alias from which the external e-mail should appear on the per-message basis.

He cannot use "delegate/on behalf of" because he uses Thuderbird/Linux. So, the only one solution I see is to remove aliases and create real accounts, but this is inconvenient.

I believe that Scalix should allow the e-mail to appear from the alias if that alias is owned by the user (and if you want to prevent the forging you can also ensure that domain of alias is the same as domain of primary user id).

P.S. this boss has too much power and it can be "show-stopper" for scalix in our company.

Sledgehammer/nut (but a dealbreaking nut it appears) but if you use sendmail as the primary SMTP listener then the sender address doesn't get rewritten for external recipients. You'll need to add a machanism for your users to do SMTP auth though (not sure if sendmail can authenticate against the Scalix directory?) If you're already using OpenLDAP or similar it should be fairly straightforward.

So the question is still open - is it possible and if 'Yes' how?

I don't see where the problem is. Simply create multiple accounts in Thunderbird with all the various aliases. Create a mailbox for each alias. Then, in Thunderbird set the From: address as needed by selecting the From from the dropdown list. Problem solved.

Ok, it is simply possible when I create for each email-address an email-accout.

But is it possible when I use scalix outlook connect to choose an other sender-address in from field.

best regards,
rudi

This seems like a reasonable feature to me. It does not seem reasonable that one would need multiple accounts just to be able to send from more than one SMTP address.

Valerion, are you implying that if SMTP auth is in place, the sending address will NOT be rewritten?

This a concern in our company also, since we have employees who represent more than one 'arm' of the business and ergo send email from more than one domain. I would not like for users to have more than one mailbox

I hope that in future releases (Scalix 11 ...) I can choose in "FROM Field" the address, from which I want to send.

select outgoing email address

Postby William » Mon Feb 05, 2007 10:10 am

I was searching for a solution to this same problem and was planning on posting to the Scalix connect forum, however it is perhaps better that I post to the end of this thread.

What new or current version(s) of Scalix Connect or Scalix Server (with Outlook) will have the abilty to select which email address the email will originate from?

same as with Exchange, it is currently not possible to select your from-smtp-alias; it is not even clear, if outlook allows this to be done for MAPI profiles at all.

Florian.
