AD GUI Extensions

Postby mhoroschun » Wed Jun 14, 2006 8:02 am

Hi,

We're currently evaluating Scalix. I've installed the AD GUI extensions on a Windows 2003 domain controller.

I expected to see a new property page in ADUC, but I just can't find it anywhere! I right click on a user, and click Properties, but the tabs available haven't changed.

This is probably very obvious, but is there anything special I need to do to see the new property page?

I ran ScalixForestPrep from the command line and it updated the schema.

Then I ran regsvr32 ScalixADPages.dll

That fixed it.

Not sure why this didn't happen by itself? Doesn't this get run as a part of the installation of the AD Schema Extensions?

Matt.

Quoting the admin guide:

After you install the schema extensions, an automatic five-minute waiting period is enforced by Active Directory. This interval is maintained so that all additions or changes will not upset current processes. After the mandatory five minutes have expired, the Scalix extensions will be activated; you and other administrators can now run your updated ADUC clients (see following) and use Active Directory to manage Scalix-hosted mail users and groups.

Did you wait the five minutes and still not see it?

Thanks,
Don

I ran the MSI for the AD GUI extensions a couple days ago and they have not shown up yet. Any suggestions?

Ok.. so a couple of things to note.

1) The MSI only unpacks some files that you actually take action with. These files are unpacked into \program files\Scalix\administration (i think that is correct).

2) You need to be running this on a Domain Controller

3) You need to be logged into a user that is a "Schema Admin". Dont assume that just because your personal account has admin rights, that you are also a Schema Admin.

After you run the MSI, there will be two files placed in the directory referred to above. One will be an exe and the other is a dll. Run the .exe to actually extend the AD Schema. Please note that this *may* not happen instantly. It may take up to 15 minutes for the schema extensions to replicate throughout your domain. Be patient.

Next after you wait 15 minutes or so, run regsvr32 on the DLL. This will register the DLL that will be used on AD Users and Computers to take advantage of the newly created attributes. At this point, you should be able click on a user in AD U&C and now see a Scalix tab.

It seems you have not had the right access rights, then. Did you run it as a domain administrator?

Cheers,

Sascha.

I logged in as "adminstrator", I can only assume that it is also a domain admin, but I will check.

There is an entry in the Event Viewer verifying that the ForestPrep completed successfully.

I didn't know about the dll part, that wasn't in the manual. However, I just try it and still no Scalix tab.

Ok, I verified that "administrator" is part of the "domain admins" group.

Hi,

this is expected to work under an english OS only. You would not happen to run anything other than english, would you?

Alright, I just checked again this morning and still no "Scalix" tab. Should I email support about this?

Did you login to your workstation, and run regsvr32 ScalixADPages.dll ? Are you sure you are in the schema admin group?

Logged in as: Administrator.

Who is a member of: Adminstrators, Domain Admins, Schema Admins (and more)

regsvr32 ScalixADPages.dll has been run several times, each producing a succesful completion message in a dialog box.

All entries in the Event Viewer show successful execution/installation. I'm stumped.

Sascha, I'm fairly certain you meant to post this here:

Ok, this is not supported in the forum anyway, but you can check this as a last resort. Use ADSIEDIT from the resource toolkit and connect using the MMC to your AD. Next, switch over to the schema by right clicking on the top level object (your AD container). From the drop down list, "Select a well known naming context", pick Schema.

You should now see CN=schema,CN=cnfiguration, ...

Look for CN=Scalix... in this view. If it does not turn up, forestprep needs to be rerun. If you happen to run a prerelease of the AD extensions, there is a manual upgrade necessary. This needs to go thru a support incident, then.

Cheers,

Sascha.

I do not see a Scalix container even though I have run forestprep a few times now. I will try again. The version I am using is from release 10.0.0.175. I do have 10.0.1.3, but the MSI files appeared to have not changed. Should I be using those instead?

Just ran ScalixForestPrep again, it is version 10.0.0.315.

EDIT: Additionally it tells me "Schema has already updated with all Scalix extensions."
