Sendmail Woes

Postby dresdn » Thu Jun 01, 2006 1:27 pm

I have to admit, I'm a Postfix guy. Qmail was rock solid when I needed it, Iearning Sendmail took too much of my time (and has an insecure history), so Postfix was the solution.

Moving to Scalix, I have to say I really miss it, especially with Amavisd-new.

There are two distinct things that I cannot figure out how and why they are happening. My setup is using the Spamassassin with the Spamass-Milter as described in the Technote (which I found be perfect documentation).

The first problem is that every e-mail that is being sent through the server is being spam-scanned. This is absolutely killing my box. We are a technology-centric company, and send *a lot* of e-mail between employees and with our clients. In reality, our outgoing e-mail doesn't need to be spam scanned (besides, let the other party do it ;)

So far I've done two things:

1. Add the trusted_networks parameter to /etc/mail/spamassassin/local.cf
2. Modify /etc/sysconfig/spamass-milter to add the -i <network>/<netmask>

Neither of these have seemed to do the trick. In looking at my /var/log/maillog, it seems that *everything* is coming from 127.0.0.1. So, maybe this is why my -i isn't working? But, it would lead me to believe that if I add -i 127.0.0.1 to the milter, then *no* mail will be scanned (since both inbound and outbound mail come from 127.0.0.1). Is there a way to solve what I am trying to do?

The second really annoying thing is that when someone from randomuser@randomdomain.com sends an e-mail to non-existant-user@ourdomain.com, sendmail wants to let them know. Well, I'm sorry, but 99% of this is spam, so there *is no mailbox* for the message to goto. Round and round it goes, and where it stops is in my Postmaster account. Where can I look to tweak the bounce settings?

I've read through the Administration Guide (page 25) a couple times now, and I don't know what is it, but I'm missing something. =P From what it seems, there's Sendmail, and then Scalix Sendmail. Then there's the different "Sendmail Interfaces." Why can't there be just one, or are they all the same?

This leads me back to where I started, I miss Postfix. It was one interface, exteremly clear configuration files, nice people on the mailing lists, and amavisd-new.

Thanks,
Mike

Hi Mike,

For issue one, see this thread:

http://www.scalix.com/community/viewtopic.php?t=1151

For issue two, you need to set the DoubleBounceAddress in your sendmail.cf to a null string. You can do this by either editing your sendmail.cf and adding this:

Code: Select all

O DoubleBounceAddress

or by adding:

Code: Select all

define(`confDOUBLE_BOUNCE_ADDRESS',`')dnl

to your sendmail.mc file and then rebuilding your sendmail.cf from that. If you choose this method, you must run:

Code: Select all

omsendin

after rebuilding the sendmail.cf file in order to get the Scalix routines put back in and you'll need to re-add the spamass-milter stuff. Once you've made that change, restart sendmail.

Thanks,
Rachel

You can have amavisd-new with sendmail, although I'll admit the integration with postfix is better.

Hi Rachel,

Thank you for helping me with my second issue. That solution did the trick.

ScalixSupport wrote:For issue one, see this thread:

Unfortunately, this doesn't work. I'm still getting all my internal -> internal and internal -> external mail being spam scanned. Most of our users are laptop users, so we have our SMTP servers set to port 2525 (to get around the home ISP port 25 filtering) using our external IP address.

Regardless of what port I use (25 or 2525) with the external IP, all of the outgoing mail is getting spam scanned.

I know the problem lies somewhere within the SMTP Relay, but I'm not sure how to go about figuring it out (the Scalix Admin. docs can only take you so far).

Thanks.

Hi Mike,

What do you have listening on socket 2525, the Scalix server or Sendmail?

Thanks,
Rachel

I'm assuming I have Scalix listening on 2525. My ~scalix/sys/smtpd.cfg contains the line:

Code: Select all

smtpd.cfg:LISTEN=mail.contentconnections.com:25,mail.contentconnections.com:2525

Hi Mike,

As long as you're receiving via the SMTP Relay (which it appears you are), then that tweak should work. I went back and checked that link and noticed that it doesn't explicitly say to stop and restart the necessary services. So, make sure you type:

omoff -d0 unix sm
omon unix sm

Thanks,
Rachel

Hi Rachel,

After making the changes from the referenced post, I just did an omshut omrc since I wasn't sure what service to start/stop.

Just to be 100% sure, I did what you suggested and mail is still being scanned.

If you want to check any of my configurations, just let me know what files to post and I'll put them up.

Thanks,
Mike

Hi Mike,

Go ahead and post your unix.mapper file and the sendmail.cf file it's pointing to.

Thanks,
Rachel

Here they are! In the sendmail.noca.cf, I just commented out the SpamAssassin settings.

Hi Mike,

All of that looks fine. So, are you certain the mail is being scanned outbound? What are you looking at that shows it? Is it the mail header once the message is received? If so, are you certain the recipient site isn't using SA as well? Can you send to a gmail or Yahoo account at look at the header there? Can you also turn on extended logging for sendmail in the unix.mapper file, send a message, then post that log? To do that, append "-X /var/log/extended.log" after "-C /etc/mail/sendmail.nosa.cf", then restart the sendmail and unix interface. Now, send a message and take a look at /var/log/extended.log and see if it shows the message being scanned.

Thanks,
Rachel

Hi Rachel,

Now I feel real dumb. =P I failed to provide the complete use case and how I was testing earlier, and for that I apologize.

The scanning of outgoing mail *isn't* being scanned, what was posted previous has worked.

What I was doing to test was sending mail to other office employees, and that mail was being scanned. Looking at it now, the behaviour only occurs when I send e-mail to an internal user.

So basically, I would like to disable Scalix User -> Scalix User spam scanning when sending mail.

Here's the general maillog when I send an e-mail to another user in the company. Also, the client sits there on "Sending mail ..." until the "spamd: clean message" line (in this case 8 seconds) - which is what my user base is complaining about.

Code: Select all

disable Scalix User -> Scalix User spam scanning

Postby tchen » Wed Jul 26, 2006 8:22 pm

Mike,

Did you figure out how to "disable Scalix User -> Scalix User spam scanning"? I'm really eager to know that too! This has been the heaviest burden to our server now, and it's totally un-necessary.

Thanks in advance if anyone else can give me a hint.

tchen.

Relay

Postby netpenthe » Thu Jul 27, 2006 12:09 am

Hmm

We run Amavisd-new and used to do so on the Postfix box, but what we found is that if you want lots of spam processing going on, you're gonna need a lot of CPU, hence having spam fitlering and mail on the same box was a bad idea, as spam processing would slow down all mail (we had webmail on same box/imap/pop etc).

So instead we built a separate spam box that uses the content_filter setting in postfix.

Now we've put in Scalix, we've kept the postfix box as a relay and a place where spam can be directed to the dedicated spam box.

Should ensure that Scalix won't slow down due to spam.
