problem adding new users/groups

I've finally managed to get to the admin screen. There seem to be a couple of fundamental problems:
1. it doesn't list the users I created during the install wizard.
2. when I try to add a user through the admin interface I get the foillowing message:
"The administration server is not responding. You shoulld check the server log files."

Which log files?
