Is it doable to install scalix and get it running on a new server for a person who has little or no linux background?

Hi,

if you are using a Scalix-certified platform I don't see any reason why you should not!

To make your first encounter easier, install on Fedora FC4 or Opensuse 10. Please have a thorough look at the release notes and the installation guide provided as a PDF.

Thanks,

Sascha.

I have found scalix to be one of the easiest platforms I have ever had to install, especially when you consider the complexity and functionality of the product.
Anyone who plans on getting familiar with linux will need to know how to use the tar and gunzip functions anyway, which are about all you need.
The documentation which comes with scalix is quite comprehensive, but written so that almost anyone can follow it.
The GUI installer makes everything a breeze.
Having said that, there's a couple of things to be aware of:
*As Sascha has already stated, FC4 is your best bet. There's one gotcha on FC4, and that's the "network check". There's several posts on this forum about how to fix it.
*Administration of the server is not quite as easy as installation, particularly the backup and restore facilities. It still makes my head hurt just reading the backup/restore document.
*Integrating spamassassin and anti-virus in particular can be tricky. Get our basic server running before you try these.
*Don't be afraid to ask questions in the forum. The support team are pretty quick to answer usually, and occasionally one of us will beat them to it. If your question has already been covered, you'll only get a gentle prod towards the right thread.

Good luck.
