message still undelivered after 4 hours

Hi community,

we are using to servers on different locations. One of them is the mail-relay for the other server. The servers are connected via VPN. But the VPN-Tunnel is very unstable :(
So the uders got often the following mail:

Warning: message still undelivered after 4 hours
Will keep trying until message is 5 days old

The Users are very angry about the 4 hours delay between sending and error notification. I searched dhe admin-documentation up and down for a switch were I can set the notification delay to maybe an hour or an half an hour.

Is there a switch to change this settings? And if yes, were is this switch??

I believe this is a sendmail config issue. There should be a line like:

dnl define(`confTO_QUEUEWARN', `4h')dnl

in your sendmail.mc

Say you want the warning after 30mins change this to:

define(`confTO_QUEUEWARN', `30m')dnl

Rebuild sendmail.cf, execute omsendin & restart sendmail.

Thx! I found the entry, tried to rebuild sendmail.mc but it fails... no idea what happend... but doesn't matter!

Found the matchich strings in sendmail.cf:

O Timeout.queuewarn=15m
O Timeout.queuereturn=1d

Glad that worked, but be aware that editing sendmail.cf directly is generally frowned upon.

Silly question, did you remove the first 'dnl' from the line in sendmail.mc?

If so, then this should have done the trick:

m4 sendmail.mc > sendmail.cf
omsendin

Hmm... I removed the first dnl from specific line also, but I don't use the m4 command...

I tried it with yast... but in the past I've done some other changes in the sendmail.cf.
It still works fine :)

But thanks for reminding that command :wink:
