Seems like when the installer runs its depcheck it doesnt validate that it has everything it needs.

* Running services check... OK
Despite reporting OK, and installing all the packages, at the end of the process I got:
Fatal error occured: Msg: Failed to configure server -- check the log for errors.
The log file reveals:
omaddacl: error while loading shared libraries: libpthread.so.0: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory'
I have encountered similar errors because of missing file, ed, and which commands. Incidentally, libpthread.so.0 is there in /lib so I dont know what its complaining about.
BUG: Dependency check doesn't.

Not related. I am installing on RHEL 4 (Centos 4.4) with the community edition 11.0.4. The problem is that merlin does not adequately do a dependency check, eg does not that it has a complete toolchain, or that the libraries are in a usable state. Please note that the error is in ommaddacl.

The problem actually is in creation of instance, i.e. the execution of ommakeom fails.
Please tell me the following:
* Are you doing a fresh install or trying to upgrade?
* Did you create a user/group by the name 'scalix' before trying to install?
* Are the forward and reverse lookup configured in DNS?
* Have the host entry been set in /etc/hosts?

2. I have attempted to install Scalix several times, that is why the scalix user is still present.
3. The DNS name of the server is resolvable in both directions by the entire enterprise, including the server itself
4. As DNS has been configured I dont see the requirement to have it in /etc/hosts, however to appease you I added it to retest, no change
I have now tried both the community edition and the enterprise edition with identical results.

Since CentOS is still unsupported so you cannot be sure. I use RHEL 4 Update 3 and
do not get any such error. For me as well libpthread.so.0 is there in /lib and libpthread.so is there in /usr/lib.
The error you have received "ERROR: [OMINST 225] Could not add queue or acl for
service SMINTFC.", describes that it is caused by system specific problem. See for
yourself:
* Check the availability of disk space in /var partition, as the complete message would
be there. If you have mount points check them as well.
* Make sure you have installed CentOS, with the software listed in the installation guide
that are required for Scalix.
We can upgrade the OS that suits Scalix requirements, then do a new clean installation
following the steps below:
1. OS upgrade, if required.
2. Remove all scalix RPMs, ones returned for command "rpm -qa | grep scalix"
3. rm -rf /var/opt/scalix* /etc/opt/scalix* /opt/scalix*
4. Remove any user/group with name 'scalix'.
5. Start scalix installation. Keep a track of the installer log created at /var/log.

I am installing on RHEL 4 (Centos 4.4) with the community edition 11.0.4. The problem is that merlin does not adequately do a dependency check

I have followed all of the steps above multiple times with no effect.
This is what I mean by inadequate dependency checks. Before even proceeding with the installation the installer should test to see if all the programs and files it needs are in place. I consider this a bugged installer, and would raise it in bugzilla if I thought it wouldnt get immediately squashed.
Here is the complete installer log from /var/log.
EDIT: I tried to post the logfile from /var/opt/scalix/sx/s/sys/install/log but the forum truncated me. There is no option to add attachments. I also tried to post the output from rpm -qa but it was also truncated.

removing a few required packages and tried installation, I was prompted for missing
dependency. We cannot say installer doesn't check, it does check.

libpthread ! So the problem is not a simple dependency missing issue.
You do indeed have libpthread on the machine, but for some reason
these commands run during install time are not finding it.

libpthread: some path issue ? Something with the system shared object
load path (ldconfig) ?
Try running ldd on the command while logged in as the user that runs the

Hi Subir, my hosts file was missing the hosts file alias as in the above post, but adding it had no effect.
Correct and correct. The problem is that these are insufficient.
Sadly it is the vendors that charge huge amounts for their packages that get it wrong. The Backup Exec installer as distributed by Symantec comes to mind. A pitfall that many vendors seem to fall into is the assumption that everyone uses the "Typical" installation profile. In a production environment, I want to have the smallest number of packages installed possible, maybe including a set of favourite utilities I use for diagnosing problems. Also, in order to comply with a strict security policy, some systems may have a significant portion of those "typical" packages removed. You cannot make the assumption that someone is going to run a "Typical" installation.
Instead of testing on a "typical" installation testbed, you should instead make a minimum installation and build that up till you have a working state. This is the approach most frequently taken in the debian packaging process. In fact, to be approved for inclusion in debian a package must be installable in a minimal chroot environment and resolve all of its own dependencies.
I tried to su to the scalix user to run ldd on omaddacl but the shell was set to /bin/true. When I set this to /bin/bash I was still not able to login. I am not familiar with the RHEL security model enough to know why this is happening.

Correct and correct. The problem is that these are insufficient.
Now, often with a complex product it is hard to track down every single
dependency because sometimes we depend on a package that is present
on 99.9% of machines, and that one doesn't get into the list. For example
I've seen products (not scalix) that have an implicit dependency on X,
and so installation fails on a headless box.
Sadly it is the vendors that charge huge amounts for their packages that get it wrong. The Backup Exec installer as distributed by Symantec comes to mind. That said, the dependency you're having trouble with is libpthread.
I can assure you that no Linux box would even boot if it were missing
libpthread ! So the problem is not a simple dependency missing issue.
You do indeed have libpthread on the machine, but for some reason
these commands run during install time are not finding it.
Next I'm trying to think of reasons why scalix commands would not find
libpthread: some path issue ? Something with the system shared object
load path (ldconfig) ?
Try running ldd on the command while logged in as the user that runs the
installer and see what that reports (does it also fail to resolve libpthread ?).
