How do I do something internaly to resolve my box ip address to a host name as you said is neccessary to do?

This is my hosts file:

127.0.0.1 localhost.localdomain localhost
192.168.1.180 mail.mydomain.com mailhost

Mx record of mydomain.com is pointing to my router's external IP address and and all ports are forwarded to the Scalix box (DMZ). Also "Anonymous Internet Requests" is allowed.

1. Find out your Scalix server's hostname:

Code: Select all

hostname --fqdn

2. On your laptop, add the following line to your windows/system32/drivers/etc/hosts file

Code: Select all

1.2.3.4 my.host.name

where 1.2.3.4 is your external IP address (the one that can be reached from the internet) and my.host.name is what you found in step 1
3. when creating your outlook profile, make sure that you use THIS name for your server name. you could also change the line in step 2 to

Code: Select all

1.2.3.4 my.host.name scalix-default-mail

to simplify your task.

Cheers,
Florian.

Thank you Florian,

Your post is useful, but my question is about setting up the Scalix box DNS not the outlook client laptop.

I should be straight forward but Im getting comfused!! So please post what has to be done (regarding DNS) to setup a mail server for a domain name.

This is what I have done so far:

1) Created an A record for MYDOMAIN.com called mail.MYDOMAIN.com
2) Pointed the MX record of the domain to mail.MYDOMAIN.com
3) On scalix box modified /etc/hosts to the following:

Code: Select all

127.0.0.1 localhost.localdomain localhost
192.168.1.180 mail.mydomain.com mailhost

What else should I do?

Do you also have a reverse lookup for this? You can check by running
nslookup IPADDRESSOFYOURMAILSERVER

You should get something like this back:

Code: Select all

Name:    mail.mydomain.com
Address:  xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx
