Scalix and VMware?

I am running on Red Hat FC4 with Scalix Community Edition Version 10 at home within VMware. This is for my personal email and I LOVE IT!! WORKS GREAT!

VMware has on their community site (VMTN) pre-built Virtual Machines running Linux with some other open source apps that you can download for free. There's even companies (ie: Oracle) providing demos of machines pre-built for users to download and try out their software. Has Scalix thought about doing this? Be a great way to spread the word about Scalix!!!

Would there be any licensing issues if a user such as myself was to post a pre-built Linux VM like the one I am currently running with Scalix Community Edition installed? I not really sure how the GPL works and how / if applies to ScalixCommunity Edition.

This won't answer your question, but I will add that I'm running Scalix on SLES9 with about 100 users in VMware ESX myself. It's working awesome, and we've been using it corporately for several months now with no problems. I'd highly recommend it.

I have sucessfully installed Scalix 10 in a VMware Server virtual machine running in a CentOS 4.2 Guest OS on a CentOS 4.2 Host. I pretty much installed it the same way you would under any normal circumstance using the bridged networking to give the Guest OS an IP on my LAN. The Host server is a older 2.5Ghz Celeron with 1GB of RAM to which I have allocated 700MB to the CentOS host for running Scalix. It's not optimal but it works. No swapping yet in the Guest OS memory space but I only have a couple of users configured with no traffic other than testing. I am using this install to test Scalix configuration changes before trying them at my client's producution Scalix server. What is nice is the ability to take a Snapshot in time before doing something major so if it fails miserably you can revert to the snapshot. Scalix should consider putting out a properly configured server/Scalix combo with the setup script ready to go as a Virtual Machine image. I think it would go a long way to making it easy for potential clients to test your software without a major time outlay. Zimbra is doing it already and has it advertised on the VMware site. See http://www.vmware.com/download/server/ regarding the VMware server and http://www.vmware.com/vmtn/appliances/ on pre-built VMs with applications.

Maybe interesting:

My scalix testserver runs on a XEN host (under suse 10.0, not OSS) and CentOS 4.
Works great with 512MB.
runs only with 10 users on a dual p4 3 GHz and 4 GB of ram (as mentioned 512 for the xen host) :)

but xen is a bit tricky. i would not suggest it for critical systems.

Xen is supposedly much better in Fedora Core 5 and set to be a major feature of RHEL5 (which is a way off yet). It'll be interesting to see if people use Xen to host mail servers: we've already seen a couple of people using (or attempting to use in one case) VMware ESX.

Hi All:

We are planning to test Scalix on VMware at the end of April and if it works well, we will make a VMware version freely available to make it easier for people to evaluate Scalix (i.e. for non-commercial, non-production use).

Regarding a post about whether it's ok to make a VMware version of Scalix available to others now, first, let me say on behalf of everyone at Scalix that we appreciate your help and enthusiasm to inform others about Scalix. That said, the current Community Edition license agreement does not allow redistribution of the software, it asks that if you want to share it with others, that you ask others to download it from our web site (we did this so that we could ask people to optionally register so that we could inform them of updates). We have scheduled a maintenance release of Scalix (all editions) in the next week or two and in that version we have changed the license agreement for Community Edition to make it freely redistributable (as long as it is for non-commercial purposes, which for your purpose obviously is not). So you could distribute a VMware version of Community Edition with that release. Even though we are making a VMware version, please don't let that stop you from distributing one yourself.

Hal, thanks for the heads up! We are all eagerly awaiting ESX 3.0 to be released this summer, and if you guys are planning on testing and possibly making modifications to optimize for VMWare's products, then you definitely have my support!

just to clarify... the version that was talked about in Hal's post did not have any modifications in the software - it is just an updated license agreement for Scalix Community Edition and Scalix Community Edition Raw that allows for redistribution of Scalix Software - please check the license agreements included with the downloads for details.

We're still considering providing a VMware image for VMWare player for trial reasons. My current assumption is that we'll do this for our upcoming Scalix 11 release which is only a few months out....

Lindsay, did you have to do anything special to get your Scalix to run under VMWare?
Everything passes the install check, and the install works right up until it attempts to install the actual server portion of the server as follows:

Not that I can remember Technica. I've actually since deleted the vmware machine but it should have been a std install with bridged networking.

It was a full RH5 install from virtual cdrom, not a downloaded vmware image.
