Mailwasher & RBL's

Postby grahamk » Fri May 18, 2007 1:27 am

Hi Guys,

I've installed Mailwasher, and the RBL's arent working. A post on the mailwasher forum explains it perfectly:

http://oss.firetrust.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=585

Any ideas anyone? I'm starting to think this issue might be caused somehow by the way scalix works.

Regards

Graham

This issue is caused because the scalix smtpd hands off the mail to sendmail, with a 127.0.0.1 address, how do i enable the original source address to be honored? or have sendmail grab all incoming mail? alternatively, how else could i integrate some type of RBL solution?

Regards

Graham

Hi grahamk
i´m searching for a solution too, mailwasher is running fine but too much spam is getting through.
I tested to put the RBL´s directly into the sendmail.cfg but it doesn´t seem to work.

I hope someone can help us ?

I have found the solution :)

viewtopic.php?t=4974

I had searched a lot previously, but with the wrong keywords so it seems. Anyway, it works great, I'm very happy :)

If you have any dramas with the post above, let me know and I'll help where I can.

i´m still getting:
The following RBLs cannot be activated as they do not appear to be functioning correctly: relays.ordb.org
on mailwasher.

Did you paste the RBL´s in the sendmail config or in the mailwasher webinterface ?
if yes, which RBL do you use ?

orbd is not functional anymore from what i know.

I'm using zen.spamhaus.org

(check out www.spamhaus.org)

as far as the relaying denied, i'm no sendmail expert, but I'd suggest putting your domain into

/etc/mail/local-host-names (or equivalent on your distro).

Ok, relaying is working now, and i can receive emails.

so i tested zen.spamhaus.org in the mailwasher config, but the error is the same.
i think my server can*t reach spamhaus.
when i type:

nslookup zen.spamhaus.org
Non-authoritative answer:
*** Can't find zen.spamhaus.org: No answer

My Scalix Server is running on a CenOS 4.4 Vserver.
Any ideas ?

Well, the fact that you cant do a lookup is normal. See:

http://www.spamhaus.org/faq/answers.las ... hnical#122

Once you have added spamhaus and removed the other, try restarting mailwasher services (if you havent already), thats all I did and it started working.

Another thing I used to test it, which will be useful, as it also ticks the counter for RBL's is send an email to nelson-sbl-test@crynwr.com from an email address on your domain. It will trigger a bot to test your mailserver.

Below is part of the email you receive as an auto-reply.

"Testing your SBL block. See http://www.crynwr.com/spam/ for more info.
Please note that this test will not tell you if your server is open for
relaying. Instead, it tests to see if your server blocks email from IP
addresses listed in various blocking lists; in this case, the SBL list."

Hope this info helps a bit.

I have had this working since around the time of this topic being posted.

More info about the issue you are having, and we may be able to help.

Make sure you are getting enough debug info from sendmail and mailwasher logs.

what would you suggest for debug info, i have the debug set up in the log level in mwserver, let me know what logs you would like to see as I can't seem to get anything from them. Also I am having the same issue as the guy above when i try to activate zen.spamhaus.org i get
"The following RBLs cannot be activated as they do not appear to be functioning correctly: spamhaus" and nothing else from the mwi.log other than it failed.

I have zen.spamhaus.org in Service Name and Domain Name.

Server type is IP-based server blacklist.

It is sounding a lot like this issue would be better dealt with on the Mailwasher forum. I am more than happy to help, but the issue has nothing to do with Scalix, as such.

I just did a quick google search of your error message, this might help.

http://oss.firetrust.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?p=4786
(specifically, it says "We have never managed to get this code to fail, excpet where the environment is using an incorrectly configured Microsoft DNS server which was adding the local domain name to it. Maybe adding a terminal '.' to the url would help? ")

PS. If you learn to search your own problems, you will find you can achieve a lot more ;) (pasting error messages into google is a good start)
