iPhone Synch with Outlook

Postby Stefan Dierkes » Mon Dec 17, 2007 6:37 am

Hello,

does anybody have experience with synching the iPhone (contacts and calendar) via iTunes and the Scalix-MAPI for Outlook with Scalix?

I presently use the German versions of
- iTunes 7.5.0.20
- Outlook 2003
- Scalix-MAPI 10.0.0.366
- Scalix-Server 10.0.5.3
The synch of contacts and dates to an iPod with this config crashes.

An update is no problem, if anybody can confirm that the synch with the iPhone is possible with a certain version.

Thank you very much for any info.

In the meantime I can answer the question myself:
- iPhone 1.1.2 OOB synchs with the above described software. Restrictions are in the normal range of synching problems (e.g. as with Palm handhelds).

I'm also interested in anybody's experience with getting the iphone to work with Scalix.

The company executive's iPhone will NOT connect to the Scalix server - even via POP3..... or so it seems. Any ideas?

Hello "slittle",

first I want to make clear that we are talking about two different topics:
1. I use successfully the synch of calendar and contact data between Scalix/Outlook via iTunes 7.5 to the iPhone. BTW it does not work with iTunes 7.6
2. You are talking aboout synching e-mails wirelessly.

For the wireless access to the e-mails the IMAP/IDLE protocoll is by far preferable to the POP3 protocol. It provides true push mail functionality which is even better than that of a BlackBerry. We use this since about one year successfully with Palm Treo Smartphones. For security reasons we use it over a VPN connection between the Treo and our CISCO firewall.
I cannot connect yet with the iPhone via VPN to our firewall yet. Our CISCO admin is working on that. After that mail access via IMAP from the iphone should be easy.

Can you connect from other devices via pop3 to your company mail server?

Regards,
Stefan

Update -

I learned a little more about this so I thought I would post an update.

When setting up an iPhone to pop3 or IMAP - (directly) to any email server - Scalix or otherwise, the iPhone tries to FORCE a secure communication protocol. You must first configure the account on the iPhone - let it try to connect once and fail... then go back into the configuration tell it NOT to use SSL methods for communication & change the ports that it is looking at. (That IS, of course, if you're not using any kind of SSL communication.)

The folks with iPhones have since been working ok, I believe.
