Mailing list question

Postby bulldozering » Sat Aug 11, 2007 2:04 pm

I have Mailman and Scalix installed on my server. I am going to setup a mailing list and want to know if anyone has any advice.

I'm not sure if Mailman is the way to go or not. Basically someone goes to my site and puts in their info to be added to the list. Then I collect the info via forms where it is stored in a file or database.

Then I create a email with the message that I want and send it out somehow locally through a Windows based program or on the Linux server.

The mailing list isn't going to be one of those collaborative ones where people can reply and see who else is on the list. It is going to be more of a community announcement or product placement sort of email where the user just gets the email.

I'm not quite sure how to put this all together. If anyone has any tips I would appreciate it.

Mailman is quite good for announce-only lists, and there's quite a lot of information on their site to assist with setting up this kind of list. Scalix and Mailman coexists happily as well.

However, it is completely decoupled from the SAC, and as such it may be confusing to newer people to figure out the interactions between the two, and how to set it up. Also, the address for the mailing list won't appear in the global address book, unless you add it specifically, which may also not be ideal for everyone.

If you want to do everything in Scalix, you can set up a group, let your script use omaddpdln to add the new members, hide it from the address book and set permissions with omaddaci to ensure only some can send to it.

I think you are on the right trail with Mailman, it's got some nifty features (headers, footers, etc) that's hard(er) to do in Scalix.

Yes, Mailman doesn't look so easy. I found a great looking solution that looks very nice, OpenEMM. I'm going to try this and if this doesn't work then maybe omaddpdln.

:)
