Funambol vs. NotifyLink - Any suggestions?

OK, I managed to setup a working Scalix server. So far everything seems to work almost fine enough to let it go live in our office environment.

For now there's only one remaining issue I somehow have to work out:

Synchronisation with our mobile devices

And devices is the keyword here. Our employees all use different phones/ PDAs by Nokia, BlackBerry and Sony Ericsson. So I took a look at NotifyLink (NL) as it is the "officially" recommended solution. Besides the fact that NL is cost-wise NOT exactly what I was looking for I stumbled over some topics in various forums that let me doubt NL being a seamless, hassle-free implementation.

Especially with BlackBerry devices there seem to be massive lacks compared to BB's BES (Business Enterprise Server). Here's a link to a German BB forum:
http://www.blackberry-forum.de/cgi-bin/ ... ;start=1#1

It mostly says that the author does NOT recommend using NL with BB devices. Some functions simply won't work and (outside-US) support is poor.
And especially his last line worries me the most (translated by sense):

"Though being really happy with Scalix as GroupWare, we're looking for other solutions, because BB integration is getting more and more important and NotifyLink is not meeting our expectations."

OK, what to do now?
Ahh, yes there was a thing (now) called Funambol I read about some weeks ago. And so I found the how-to-article in the scalix wiki. Damn, the author only talks about a Windows-installation and explicitely mentions that he set-up Funambol on a different server. Bad catch- I do not have another server let alone one with WIN as OS.

1. Has anyone a solution to run both Scalix & Funambol on the same server? (Linux that is ;-)
2. Can anyone share his experiences with a Scalix/Funambol environment?
3. Is there another alternative providing full sync with mobile devices? Open Source welcome

I'd appreciate your thoughts because I also think that the mobile part is on the rise and getting sooner or later a mandatory feature in modern GroupWare.

Greetings

Tomster;

I managed to install Funambol and have it working. The problem was it installed an older version of Java on the server and messed up every single web access to the server.

I didn't have time to check on that, but as soon as I do some progress, I will post a comment in here.

I have no problems utilizing a separate server to sync with BB. In fact I'd prefer exactly that, so that I can treat it as a stand alone appliance, that once it works I won't change for as long as we never need, i.e., for as long as we don't change the OS on the blackberry devices or substantially improve the software on the funambol server.

What I really care are two points:
1) A reliable and functional connector for BB, that does what needs to be done: sync emails, folders, contact, tasks over-the-air, push or pull (if within minutes)
2) A linux based server, that I have control over, and resides side-by-side with our scalix server, integrated with and supported by Scalix.

Jaime;

I am trying to have this setup on the scalix server, as a lot of customers don't need or don't have a spare machine just to dedicate to Funambol. Of course, we could also make this second machine as a gateway for Scalix anyway, but my goal is to have everything on the same machine.

thanks for the comments.

@EagleClaw

Sounds great! The problems you experienced were sort of what I found browsing the web. It's obviously not only a matter of tomcat's access port rather than numerous adjustments have to be made.
I am truely looking forward to hear about your progress. wannahave...

so long

The current funambol BB connector (v3.0) readme-handheld.txt says:

- The current version of the plug-in has a limitation on the size of the
received message. All messages are received, but filtered to get the
first 13 Kb for each.

- The current version of the plug-in does not handle mail attachments,
so they are not transferred to the device.

:( :( :( :( :( :( :( can anyone confirm this?

Both BB Enterprise and Notifylink support attachments. This is not goood for fumambol BB.

Anyone using the BB JDE PIM/Email sync?
