trouble adding users or groups

Postby jbeam » Tue Dec 06, 2005 10:04 pm

I've just installed Scalix and whenever I try to add a user or group I get the following error:

Can not update user information. One of the attributes has an illegal value.

The following entry appears in the Administration Manager log:
2005-12-06 20:40:15,778 ERROR [GetMemberAccessGroupList.createSOAPResponseMessage:235] omchkaci : [OM 16078] An attribute's value contains invalid characters.

Any ideas?

I CAN add a user from the prompt and have it show in SAC. I can not, however, save any chages to the account from the web interface.

Is it possible that these is some path error somewhere?

Hi jbeam,

What is the name of your mailnode? Do you have any special characters in its name?

Thanks,
Don

Hi Don,

Our naming convention "bfr_"<x>. So I named the linux box "bfr_scalix". During the install, when prompted for mailnode info I left the suggested values in the textbox.

So that would be "bfr_scalix,org"

Let me guess, the "_" is an invalid character??

This may tie into a separate problem loggin in to the webmail interface. I'm getting an invalid char error there.

Thanks for your help.

Hi Jason,

Yes, the underscore is the invalid character. You might want to rethink your naming convention. According to RFC 952 DoD Internet host table specification

"1. A "name" (Net, Host, Gateway, or Domain name) is a text string up
to 24 characters drawn from the alphabet (A-Z), digits (0-9), minus
sign (-), and period (.)."

If you are just starting out you may want to sort out your machine name then uninstall and reinstall Scalix. Changing the FQDN of a Scalix server has many repercussions for Scalix. We do provid sxmodfqdn to accomplish this. You'll want to read the admin guide and the man pages before you run sxmodfqdn.

Also you can't change the mailnode name. You can add a new mailnode and make it the primary mailnode. But again, the best thing to do if you are just starting would be to do a fresh install.

Best wishes,
Don

Hi Jason,

What version of Scalix did you install? You used the installer right?

I tried to reproduce this but the installer didn't succeed for me with an underscore in my hostname.

Thanks,
Don

For some reason the naming convention here as been as described in my previous post. I'd like to convert them all to '-' rather than '_' ...eventually.

I'll try uninstalling scalix, changing the machine name and then reinstalling.

I did use the installer to install the community edition. 9.0.4.52 shows on webmail login screen. Not sure if that is release version or just the version of the webmail client.

Thanks,
Jason

Hi Jason,

Changing your machine name is a good idea.

We now have release 9.4.2 available for download. I think you'd be much happier using that version as it has many fixes including the fact that the installer will fail if there is an underscore in the host name. :-)

Best wishes,
Don

Don,

I'm now up and running on the previous version. Are there other advantages to downloading the next version?

The "_" in the hostname was the problem. Uninstalling, changing the hostname and then reinstalling was a simple fix.

Thank you for your help.

Hi Jason,

There are many advantages of upgrading to the latest version. There have been many enhancements and bug fixes. Plus if you have troubles going forward the answer may well be that you need to upgrade.

Regards,
Don
