Scalix 11.0.4 on FC 5 Web Problems

Postby Mark.Kosinski » Wed Aug 29, 2007 11:11 am

I was running Scalix 11.0.2 on FC 5 with no issues. I downloaded Scalix Community 11.0.4 and ran the installer as an upgrade. Since then I have not been able to access SAC. I get Error 503. SELinux is disabled. The output from omshowlog -l 3 is:

Looks like not all the information made it into my first post. It appears that tomcat is running, here is the output from ps aux | grep java:

<!-- Defines a cluster for this node,
By defining this element, means that every manager will be changed.
So when running a cluster, only make sure that you have webapps in there
that need to be clustered and remove the other ones.
A cluster has the following parameters:

className = the fully qualified name of the cluster class

clusterName = a descriptive name for your cluster, can be anything

mcastAddr = the multicast address, has to be the same for all the nodes

mcastPort = the multicast port, has to be the same for all the nodes

mcastBindAddr = bind the multicast socket to a specific address

mcastTTL = the multicast TTL if you want to limit your broadcast

mcastSoTimeout = the multicast readtimeout

mcastFrequency = the number of milliseconds in between sending a "I'm alive" heartbeat

mcastDropTime = the number a milliseconds before a node is considered "dead" if no heartbeat is received

tcpThreadCount = the number of threads to handle incoming replication requests, optimal would be the same amount of threads as nodes

tcpListenAddress = the listen address (bind address) for TCP cluster request on this host,
in case of multiple ethernet cards.
auto means that address becomes
InetAddress.getLocalHost().getHostAddress()

tcpListenPort = the tcp listen port

tcpSelectorTimeout = the timeout (ms) for the Selector.select() method in case the OS
has a wakup bug in java.nio. Set to 0 for no timeout

printToScreen = true means that managers will also print to std.out

expireSessionsOnShutdown = true means that

useDirtyFlag = true means that we only replicate a session after setAttribute,removeAttribute has been called.
false means to replicate the session after each request.
false means that replication would work for the following piece of code: (only for SimpleTcpReplicationManager)
<%
HashMap map = (HashMap)session.getAttribute("map");
map.put("key","value");
%>
replicationMode = can be either 'pooled', 'synchronous' or 'asynchronous'.
* Pooled means that the replication happens using several sockets in a synchronous way. Ie, the data gets replicated, then the request return. This is the same as the 'synchronous' setting except it uses a pool of sockets, hence it is multithreaded. This is the fastest and safest configuration. To use this, also increase the nr of tcp threads that you have dealing with replication.
* Synchronous means that the thread that executes the request, is also the
thread the replicates the data to the other nodes, and will not return until all
nodes have received the information.
* Asynchronous means that there is a specific 'sender' thread for each cluster node,
so the request thread will queue the replication request into a "smart" queue,
and then return to the client.
The "smart" queue is a queue where when a session is added to the queue, and the same session
already exists in the queue from a previous request, that session will be replaced
in the queue instead of replicating two requests. This almost never happens, unless there is a
large network delay.
-->
<!--
When configuring for clustering, you also add in a valve to catch all the requests
coming in, at the end of the request, the session may or may not be replicated.
A session is replicated if and only if all the conditions are met:
1. useDirtyFlag is true or setAttribute or removeAttribute has been called AND
2. a session exists (has been created)
3. the request is not trapped by the "filter" attribute

The filter attribute is to filter out requests that could not modify the session,
hence we don't replicate the session after the end of this request.
The filter is negative, ie, anything you put in the filter, you mean to filter out,
ie, no replication will be done on requests that match one of the filters.
The filter attribute is delimited by ;, so you can't escape out ; even if you wanted to.

filter=".*\.gif;.*\.js;" means that we will not replicate the session after requests with the URI
ending with .gif and .js are intercepted.

The deployer element can be used to deploy apps cluster wide.
Currently the deployment only deploys/undeploys to working members in the cluster
so no WARs are copied upons startup of a broken node.
The deployer watches a directory (watchDir) for WAR files when watchEnabled="true"
When a new war file is added the war gets deployed to the local instance,
and then deployed to the other instances in the cluster.
When a war file is deleted from the watchDir the war is undeployed locally
and cluster wide

mcastTTL = the multicast TTL if you want to limit your broadcast

mcastSoTimeout = the multicast readtimeout

mcastFrequency = the number of milliseconds in between sending a "I'm alive" heartbeat

mcastDropTime = the number a milliseconds before a node is considered "dead" if no heartbeat is received

tcpThreadCount = the number of threads to handle incoming replication requests, optimal would be the same amount of threads as nodes

tcpListenAddress = the listen address (bind address) for TCP cluster request on this host,
in case of multiple ethernet cards.
auto means that address becomes
InetAddress.getLocalHost().getHostAddress()

tcpListenPort = the tcp listen port

tcpSelectorTimeout = the timeout (ms) for the Selector.select() method in case the OS
has a wakup bug in java.nio. Set to 0 for no timeout

printToScreen = true means that managers will also print to std.out

expireSessionsOnShutdown = true means that

useDirtyFlag = true means that we only replicate a session after setAttribute,removeAttribute has been called.
false means to replicate the session after each request.
false means that replication would work for the following piece of code: (only for SimpleTcpReplicationManager)
<%
HashMap map = (HashMap)session.getAttribute("map");
map.put("key","value");
%>
replicationMode = can be either 'pooled', 'synchronous' or 'asynchronous'.
-->
<!--
When configuring for clustering, you also add in a valve to catch all the requests
coming in, at the end of the request, the session may or may not be replicated.

The Saga Continues

Postby Mark.Kosinski » Thu Aug 30, 2007 12:26 pm

Ok, one mistake I found was that I downloaded 11.0.2 and there was a 11.1 available. I downloaded 11.1, ran the installer this morning. First thing was my smart host entry in sendmail.cf was changed, I reran mc4 and regenerated a cf file, fixed that problem. SAC, Webmail....still getting errors. I ran omcheck -s -d > /tmp/check_file and found that I had a bunch of files owned by user 60536 (not scalix). Ran the generated script and fixed those. Tomcat is running on the system, ps uax | grep java produces:

Code: Select all

root      2370  0.5 18.0 485176 93036 ?        Sl   08:48   1:13 /usr/java/jre1.5.0_11/bin/java -server -Djava.net.preferIPv4Stack=true -Xms256m -Xmx256m -Dscalix.instance=/var/opt/scalix/zr -Djava.util.logging.manager=org.apache.juli.ClassLoaderLogManager -Djava.util.logging.config.file=/var/opt/scalix/zr/tomcat/conf/logging.properties -Djava.endorsed.dirs=/opt/scalix-tomcat/common/endorsed -classpath /usr/java/jre1.5.0_11/lib/tools.jar:/opt/scalix-tomcat/bin/bootstrap.jar:/opt/scalix-tomcat/bin/commons-logging-api.jar -Dcatalina.base=/var/opt/scalix/zr/tomcat -Dcatalina.home=/opt/scalix-tomcat -Djava.io.tmpdir=/var/opt/scalix/zr/tomcat/temp org.apache.catalina.startup.Bootstrap start

Tomcat appears to be running as root...should it be running as apache, scalix or possibly a user named tomcat??

lsof -i :8009 produces:

Code: Select all

I guess that is telling me that port 8009 TCP is listening, but only to localhost.localdomain

I really try not to physically touch the machine, so should the localhost.localdomain be pointing to the VPN address of the machine??

I can send and receive email internally and eternally just fine, the problem really is that I can not access SAC or Webmail (SWA). Has anyone made it through to the other side of this particular cob web??

tomcat does indeed run as root by default. You can set it to be an unprivileged user, but then you have to put the correct entries into your sudoers file, as some things it needs to do can only be done as root. Instructions are on the Scalix wiki.

the 8009 on localhost is correct. Apache's mod_jk or mod_proxy will forward connections to that port. If you want to test if the issue is in tomcat itself (as opposed to apache), you can uncomment the 8080 connector in /var/opt/scalix/??/tomcat/conf/server.xml and connect to that directly. Webmail should at least work then.

Thanks Valerion,

I did fire up the X interface on the system and locally on the host system I get all the way to the login screen. I attempted to log in with the sxadmin user's credentials and ... no luck. I used to be able to access SAC and Webmail from anywhere. My first thought this morning was to turn down tomcat and apache, rerun the installer and see if it updates and "fixes" my problem. I'm having second thoughts about doing that as I don't want to end up with more of a mess than I have now. Any pointers???

I would suggest you reconfigure the web components using the installer.

Another thought

Postby Mark.Kosinski » Mon Sep 03, 2007 9:33 pm

The scalix server is inside a VPN using IP address 192.168.2.54 with DynDNS having the zone files MX is pointed to zephyr.genfam.info. The A record for the domain obtains the IP from my router. It isn't a static IP. Previously to upgrading to 11.1 from 11.0.02 sac and webmail worked fine and the scalix seemed happy. Could it be that the NAT redirection is tossing sac and webmail a curve? I've litterly read almost every post on the forums that mention sac and the 503 error persists. My last attempt I uninstalled all the web services and uninstalled tomcat and then reinstalled them. No luck... The sxadmin and sxqueryadmin users passwords are fine. I have another web site set up as a VirtualHost, mapped in /etc/opt/scalix-tomcat/connector/ajp/instance-zephyr.conf which works so it seems the mod_proxy_ajp is working. Not too sure where else to look...

Scalix 11 put an apache virtual host into their configuration (look in /etc/opt/scalix-tomcat/connector/ajp/instance-<name>.conf). Wonder if this isn't causing your issues? You can try running this without a virtual host if you want and see if this solves the problem.

Hi Valerion,

The previous version of Scalix I was running was a 11. version using VirtualHosts with Apache. It worked fine. The only odd thing I experienced then was that once I installed scalix 11.01 all of my VirtualHost configurations had to be inside /etc/opt/scalix-tomcat/connector/ajp/instance-zephyr.conf. I didn't necessarily see that as a problem then. I do have another public web site that is hosted on the system that currently is setup as a VirtualHost, it is running with the entries in /etc/opt/scalix-tomcat/connector/ajp/instance-zephyr.com just fine. That would indicate that the mod_proxy_ajp is functioning as intended. As far as I can tell the real problem seems to be with java and tomcat. I did notice that the JRE1.5.0_11 that is required by Scalix 11.1 is missing tools.jar (which is called from the java command to start tomcat). Researching that I found that tools.jar does not ship with JRE, it is a JDK file. My previous Scalix instance 11.02 was using JDK 1.42 and worked as it should. I have the debug entries in both log4j.properties files, unfortunately, without being able to actually access sac or webmail the entries I'm getting are only related to initialization. As I've poured through the files looking for things that could be wrong I noticed there were references to sample-service-config.xml which the contents are shown below:

Code: Select all

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="ISO-8859-1"?>

<!--
    This is the configuration file for a CAA Service Module and is parsed by CAAConfigLoader
    which attempts to load all the values into the system.

    Copy this file and name it something using the convention <service-name>-config.xml,
    make sure it goes in the webapps/caa/config directory, remove this comment and add your own
    service config (see below).

    Each service is in a tag of its own (e.g. <my-service> below).  There can be multiple services in this
    file if you wish.

    The following elements can be used:

        <disabled>          - set this to true to make this service unavailable to clients

    There are several "components" that can be configured:

        <transformer>       - specifies the CAATransformer implementation class (mandatory)
        <connection>        - specifies the CAAConnection implementation class (optional)
        <service>           - specifies the CAAService implementation class (mandatory)
        <session>           - specifies the CAASession implementation class (optional)
        <securityProvider>  - specifies the CAASecurityProvider implementation class (optional)

    All the mandatory component class files specified *must* exist in the classpath when the system is
    started.

    Each component can have further arbitrary configuration at the <class> level or by specifying
    delegate configuration to another class using a <configurator> element.  This element can contain:

        <class>             - specifies the CAAConfigurable implementation class (mandatory) that
                              will be delegated to handle configuration for this component. The framework
                              will call readConfig()on this class.
        <params>            - an element containing arbitrary parameters to pass to the class specified
                              in <class>.  This can be any valid XML and as long as the delegate can
                              handle it OK, you should be OK.

    Further help on how to implement the interfaces mentioned above can be found in the main
    CAA Developer's Guide.

    Enjoy!
-->
<caa-config>

    <!-- below is a sample service configuration.  Create your own like this
    <my-service>
        <disabled>
            false
        </disabled>
        <transformer>
            <class>
                com.scalix.mytest.TestTransformer
            </class>
        </transformer>
        <connection>
            <class>
                com.scalix.mytest.TestConnection
            </class>
            <configurator>
                <class>
                    com.scalix.caa.framework.CAAConnectionPoolManager
                </class>
                <params>
                    <minConnections>1</minConnections>
                    <maxConnections>8</maxConnections>
                </params>
            </configurator>
        </connection>
        <service>
            <class>
                com.scalix.mytest.TestService
            </class>
        </service>
        <securityProvider>
            <class>
                com.scalix.mytest.TestKerberosProvider
            </class>
        </securityProvider>
    </my-service>
    -->

</caa-config>

This being an example file I assumed it actually should not be getting parsed, but it is. This file is in /var/opt/scalix/zr/caa/config and is the only config (xml) file producing anything that looks like an error during initialization.

The odd thing is that email and the address book are working using Outlook as a client, I just can't access the web admin interface or webmail. I did check the sxadmin and sxqueryadmin users using ldapsearch and both appear fine, I get all the information concerning the accounts. I've run omcheck -s -d > /tmp/scalix_fix_perms.sh the resulting script is not showing that there are any owner, group or permission problems. (all the components listed have ....checks complete with nothing else listed).

Here is the output from ps aux | grep java:

As you can see from the above, there is no tools.jar file. What has me puzzled is why I am not seeing an error...

I went and retrieved jdk1.5.0_12 and re-ran the scalix-installer thinking I could point the installer at the jdk instead of the jre, no luck, the installer is definitely wanting jre. I checked jre1.5.0_11 and 12, there is no tools.jar shipped with them. This is what has me thinking the problem is with tomcat or java or both.

I a bit afraid to completely uninstall scalix, I know I should be able to tar the message store and restore the email contained, but if I can not make scalix happy again on this box the message store itself wouldn't be too useful to me.

If I ever get this working again I'll definitely think twice before I upgrade... Any light you can shed on what else I can look at is a BIG help!!!!

I was going back through the apache error log and noticed today that I have entries as shown here:

Code: Select all

[Mon Sep 03 12:59:36 2007] [error] ap_proxy_connect_backend disabling worker for (localhost)
[Mon Sep 03 12:59:36 2007] [error] proxy: AJP: failed to make connection to backend: localhost

[Mon Sep 03 13:00:06 2007] [error] proxy: AJP: disabled connection for (localhost)
[Mon Sep 03 13:00:16 2007] [error] proxy: AJP: disabled connection for (localhost)
[Mon Sep 03 13:00:26 2007] [error] proxy: AJP: disabled connection for (localhost)
[Mon Sep 03 13:00:36 2007] [error] (111)Connection refused: proxy: AJP: attempt to connect to 127.0.0.1:8009 (localhost) failed

It appears this might the cause of the error 503....

I'll investigate more, if any of the Scalix Techs can guide me to the right place to look I'd be grateful!!!

Reading through some more posts associated with the error:

Code: Select all

Connection refused: proxy: AJP: attempt to connect

I think I've found the culprit, and now can access sac via:

Code: Select all

https://192.168.2.1/sac

Attempting to log in with sxadmin with the correct password (I've run ldapsearch against the login and sxqueryadmin) I am now getting:

Code: Select all

Could not login
Check the login ID and Password.

The post:

Glad you go this far.

Have a look in /var/opt/scalix/??/tomcat/logs/scalix-caa.log for the SAC error log. Most likely is that SAC cannot authenticate properly, or there's an error in the sxquetyadmin user, or it's password does not match the one configured in SAC/CAA/RES.

I was able to log in to sac with my login. The sxadmin user was not part of the AdminGroup or any other for that matter. I added sxadmin to the appropriate groups and now am able to log in as sxadmin.

It's taken quite a while to sort this out, but on the plus side I learned alot.

I have an interesting variation on this theme.

I can get logged on as the user sxadmin in SAC and SWA but the mobile client gives me an error "An error occurred: Unknown error (A00000). catalina.out shows:

The process url is showing main.do - then I thought there was an entry in the general.cfg that could be affecting this LDAP_MUST_AUTHENTICATE="false" so I took this out and restarted everything.

Now the error is as above, user name/password invalid but they are not - this is only on the mobile client. I can still logon to SAC and the webmail as sxadmin but not the mobile client using the same name and password for all of them.

scalix-api.log is showing:

Oh, I have hosting running on this server - would this impact mobile client? I can not logon to the SWA or Mobile client with any other users. Now that means users that existed on the primary mailnode or the 'hosted' mailnodes.

I'm on 11.2 running on centos 5.

I do see this warning in the catalina.out
og4j:WARN No appenders could be found for logger (org.apache.catalina.core.ContainerBase.[Catalina].[lavender.customtech.com.au].[/api].[rest]).
log4j:WARN Please initialize the log4j system properly.

How do I initialize the log4j?
