Feature Request: Allow multiple IMAP servers

Scalix should allow users to add additional IMAP mailboxes on other servers in addition to their Scalix mailbox on the Scalix server. Like this, a user would be able to manage all his email from one single place. That would be really cool, I think.

Not sure about what you're asking for but there is no IMAP server which can manage mailboxes from *other* imap server: that's a client job.
You can easily manage all your IMAP accounts from a single point using Thunderbird (IMHO the best IMAP client nowadays on Windows) or Evolution if you play with Linux.
I think your request is related to the possibility of having Outlook and or Scalix Web Access to manage IMAP accounts from other servers but that's not quite easy as those clients play with MAPI protocol, not IMAP.

Yes, what I was asking for is the possibility to access the other mailboxes from within SWA - just talking about the web client here. (Outlook's way of handling IMAP is a totally different and very annoying thing -- but that's not something Scalix can change ...)

SWA is an web replacement for the Outlook / Scalix bundle. Therefore Scalix Web Access is designed to act and behave just as Outlook does. As SWA does not access the mail server using IMAP protocol you can't have the option to open other mailboxes unless they're other Scalix mailboxes.
If you need a web client interface talking with *any* IMAP server and allowing you to open multiple IMAP accounts at the same time you may want to take a look at horde. (not sure about the latter feature).

SWA does use IMAP to access the message store. There's no reason why it
couldn't be enhanced to support multiple servers. However, it doesn't support
multiple servers at present.

I do not agree. Scalix Web Access (it's Scalix Web Access not IMAP Web Mail) ... manages items such as calendar, contacts, notes etc. far beyond the capabilities of the IMAP protocol: it implements the MAPI features.
If it was a simple replacement for a generic IMAP webmail why did they reinvent the wheel ? There are a lot of pretty good web interfaces for IMAP servers out there.

well, you can't fully disagree here as dboreham is actually someone who worked for us on the SWA architecture for a while!
we did implement a lot of stuff on top of IMAP for SWA so to support advanced functionality.
as such, it would be possible to have SWA talk to other IMAP servers, so it is a valid feature request. based on capabilities, it would be less powerful than working with a Scalix server, but could support basic email nevertheless.
having said that, it's not a really frequent request amongst our customers, so while it's point taken, I don't expect any work on this to be done anytime soon. Most Scalix servers are operated in corporate environments where users bypassing the server is also not really wanted from a security point of view....
Cheers,
Florian.
