Search Suggestion

Postby smpoole7 » Thu Jan 15, 2009 8:52 am

And if I'm just doing it wrong, tell me. I'll blush for a minute, mumble and then start doing it the right way. :)

Most search engines will allow you to limit the results of a search. Some use logical operators (AND, OR). Some allow you to use "+" and "-" to positively require or exclude keywords. Really handy is the ability to use quoted phrases such as "outlook connector".

This way, I could do a search like,

Code: Select all

+centos +"login problem" -outlook

... and get precisely what I want.

I've tried the "advanced search" page, but if I enter, for example, "broken pipe," I'll get pages where in a single thread, one reply says something like, "I think this is broken," and the next says, "we need a way to pipe results into grep." See what I'm saying? The search engine apparently searches all posts in the thread simultaneously. If the entered terms appear ANYWHERE in the thread, you get a hit.

This is just a suggestion for the forum's maintainers: it might reduce the number of repeat posts here if

(a) searches could be made more specifically-targeted
(b) quoted phrases could be used (ex., require "outlook connector" and NOT just "outlook" and "connector")

Just an idea.
